ok, well, downloaded prime95, clicked the prime95.exe, asked if i wanted to join gimps?, clicked just stress, went through some crap, said Self-Test 1024K passed, is that it? is there more?
is this what it does?

Yup that's all it does, but you have to let it run for 24 hours, it will report any errors if the computer is no stable.

will it give a final report after the 24hr test, or does it just say complete?

No. The whole point is for the program not to report errors.
It's not all that unusual for errors to be reported only after 8 hours.
It is rare after 12 hours.
If you get errors only after several hours, this is a result of slight instability because the system is running with little or no margin. It's stable enough to boot and to be moderately stressed, but as soon as the system is under enough load to go over that critical point, it will freeze.
Most people run it for 12 hours or so, some for 24 hours just to be sure in their system's stability. The CPU temp under Prime95 load will jump 7, 8, 9 degrees C or so.

guess it's the waiting game then

Exactly.
Why do you have that screen name?

everyone asks that, it's from quake 3 arena, used to be dominator a few years back, during a game, someone said they felt they had just been molested by me, so i went w/ it

Some people didn't support Cardinal Law's resignation if you know what I mean.
Are you not concerned you may be mistaken for one of them?

hehehe, if they do, oh well, kinda funny, it was meant from the beginning to make ppl wonder, but, my handle isn't a discussion for these forums, it's just a handle, noone else uses it, kinda like your prison number is yours, made ppl ask didn't it

hehehe, never finished reading that, and to add to it, i'm starting to believe that the higher pr rated chips can be overclocked further, just takes more to do it(except maybe the opteron, that one guy used ln2 and still only got what, 2.2), but, anyway, just to update, prime95 says it's at 28.68% complete of M19357621

Make sure you click on options and run the Torture test, that will stress it the most and will show any instabilities:)

won't let me, it's greyed out
EDIT: ok, i see, what selection should i choose, blend is default

That probably means you're actually testing a number for primality (or factoring it), not stress testing. If you don't want to participate in GIMPS, you should click on Advanced->Quit GIMPS.
I take it you're using v23.6 if the torture test gives you another menu. Just using the default should be fine.

k, may not have seen the edit, so, which do i choose under the torture test? small fft? in-place large fft? or blend?

No.
Double click on PRIME95.EXE to start the program.
Just Stress Testing (if prompted) > OK >
Options > Torture Test

yeah, i did that, now it asks for a choice for the torture test

that's the one i got c......., i did what you said, when i clicked torture under options, a box came up w/ 3 options
small fft's
in-place large fft's
blend
which do i choose
EDIT: ok, didn't see you edited your post, thanks

Because I downloaded it & sure enough you get those options.
I guess go with the second one.

and so it starts over again, just another 24 hours, tick, tock, tick, tock

This is the difference between the three (from the whatsnew.txt file):
There are now 3 flavors of torture testing. One that operates on small FFTs only, theoretically maximizing FPU stress. One that operates in place on large FFTs only, maximizing heat and power drain. One that runs a blend of tests using lots of memory, possibly catching errors that might only occur at a specific memory address.

Well, if people don't care about what kind of errors they get and were only interested in the most reliable system stability test, which one of these three options addresses that goal the best then?

Probably Blend. It looks like Blend is similar to the original Prime95 torture test, which ran FFTs between 8k and 1024k by default.

...but the second one has maximum heat and power consumption, why would that not be the one to push the CPU over the edge, prooving its instability.

i chose the large, still running, *snore*

It looks like they all have advantages and disadvantages. It probably depends on what you want find out about your stability.
Without having run each for great lengths of time, I'd say this is probably when to use each:
-Small FFT if you want to find out whether the CPU just functions correctly at the current speed.
-Large FFT is you want to find out whether your cooling and power supply are adequate.
-Blend if you want to sufficiently test the functionality of the CPU, generate a decent amount of heat, and stress the memory more heavily.

how funny, c..... was right, couldn't finish prime95 @ 14x172=2408, but, i did get it to go at least 8hrs @ 13.5x179=2416.5, how funny is that, all stable, w/ higher fsb and higher o/c in general
