I have my PC connected to an inhouse server running Windows 2003 Standard Server. If I start the server first and then the workstation, the cross-over cable connection works perfectly. If I take the workstation down and then back up the connection works. If I leave the workstation running and restart the server, I cannot connect from the workstation. Restarting the workstation re-establishes link correctly and everything works. Is the a way to avoid having to restart the workstation? Thanks.
I would assume the w2k3 server is running DNS. What happens is the workstation looses contact with the server, and cannot achieve contact again unless the network connection is reset. So if the workstation is running Windows 2000/XP just reset the network connection and it should work fine again. ;)

Open a command prompt on the client and type
ipconfig /renew
That's for NT5-based systems. For 9X I think the command is winipconfig (which brings up a GUI, IIRC).

It's actually winipcfg, but ipconfig works in 9x systems as well.

ipconfig/renew works on XP and I think all NTFS machines...and winipcfg for all Windows 9x
I just used ipconfig /release_all and renew_all on a box this evening - worked okay. *EDIT* it was 98SE - probably why.
