View Full Version : Quitting Smoking
I know that I posted a thread similar to this in GC, but I need some help with this bad. I quit like 2 weeks ago, and everything was going somewhat smoothly. I took a step backwards toward the begining, but quit again after 1 day. For some reason, I have been really really stressed the past few days, and all that I can think about is a cigarette. I am not too sure what to do, since it has brought back physical cravings, and the mental aspect is so hard. I really need to quit for myself, and some other alterior motives, but this is getting rough. What do I do? I know some of you guys have done this, and I need some help.....I have a feeling that if this keeps up I may just give in tomorrow. :(
Don't give up!
I think the trick is to do something you don't associate w/ smoking. Play a game or go for a walk.
My dad quit cold turkey after a couple of years without even realizing it. He just moved and didn't know where to by cigarettes, and simply didn't care. He wasn't even trying to quit, but just never got by to buying a pack, and never bothered to again. The key is to just keep your mind off of it completely. At the age that you're at, its not possible for your body to even be remotely dependent on nicotine. Just keep yourself busy, and your mind occupied. Do some online gaming, or come here and spam the forums ;). Good luck. I'm sure you will make it.
if you crave ciggs.. just smoke something else instead. thats what i like to do :-p

If you're really really having a hard time, get the patch, and some sugar free gum of your liking.
Gum takes care of the oral thing, patch takes care of the nicotine.
By the 'biggest' patch, and cut them up if you need to. They work fine when cut in 1/2 or 1/3s.
Do it about 2 or 3 weeks, stepping down every week. (full patch, then half patch, then 1/3 patches, depending on how much you smoked per day.)

I just well, chewed gum... my nails... everything. I still bite everything in sight as a result of quitting. I believe in you, Tray!

You have no idea what you are talking about!!!!!!!!
As a non smoking smoker I can only give you the advice that has kept me off cigarettes for over a year this time. Don't take that first drag!!! Do anything to not do that. Not even a little one. It is also a good idea to think about it as a 1 day at a time kind of thing. I used the patch to help me deal with the mental addiction before I was forced to deal with the physical addiction. It helped. If you want to talk more about it just PM me or AIM me. Good luck!!!

I've never heard of this before my friend signed up for it. There is some new procedure where they use a laser and zap some part of the ear (sounds dumb to me) and that makes you quit. right there on the spot. There is a 3 month waiting list and 3 of my friends that are die hard smokers are on it. The got on it after one of their dads that had been smoking for 20+years stopped then and there. If anyone is interested i can tryto find more info.
sounds kinda wierd to me but.... hey if it works

What? I don't bite that hard... hehe. If you're going to the California thing, nahmus, PM me!!
Step up your folding or give SETI a shot as well! Either of these will show you what a real addiction is and once you've been bitten, you'll need the money you used to spend on cigarettes to build more computers (and pay the light bill!).
Seriously, take it from a 47 year old smoker that this is one battle that you will never reget. I wish that I had the fortitude to quit and stay quit when I was your age. Even with a physical job that keeps me in pretty good shape, there's nothing like the wheezing you encounter once you get to the top of the steps, nor the aroma that permiates your clothes and everything else that you own. If the smell of your car and bedroom isn't enough, take a look in the mirror at your lovely yellow teeth that no amount of Crest will take care of.
If this isn't enough to convince you, do a bit of research and "relearn" the obvious, without going through it again, we all know the health risks associated with tobacco use.
After taking the time to respond to this thread, I think I just may join you.
Good Luck!

I've never been addicted to anything other than the forums, folding, computers, etc.
But if you have to break an addiction, I've heard that it's always best to replace whatever it is you are trying to quit with something else.
Our Sgt. back when I was in JROTC used toothpicks. Instead of reaching in his pocket for a pack of smokes, he would reach and pull out a toothpick to chew on.
It's worth a try. Whatever way you try, I hope it brings success!

Frank I'm right there with you man. I've been a smoker for over 30 yrs. I quit for 2 solid yrs when I was around 18 and I regret the day I started again. I just took one drag and that was it. I bought a pack an hour later. Now I'm 44 with the yellow teeth and the weezzing and all. If there is a miricle lazer shot in the ear that will make me quit I'm on it. Post a link to that so I can see some info about it. I smoke 2 cartons a week = 75 bucks X 4 = 300 bucks a month. I could make a new Harley payment with that money. Or have the biggest personnel folding farm in the US after a yr or so.
When I quit all those yrs ago it was summertime and I bought orange juice ice cream bars by the dozen. Every hour or so I ate one to keep my hands busy. Somehow I don't think that would work for me now. Find something healthy you like to eat and have some with you at all times. Oh and one day at a time is too hard. Try one hr at a time. After a couple weeks you will beat it.
OK again I'm with you Frank. I need to quit!
