Is it normal for a Maxtor 120GB 8mb cache ATA/133 to make screeching noise during defragment or boot up?

a friend of mine has the 120gb maxtor and that too makes that noise at start-up. I've not seen any problems with it so i'm assuming it's normal.
Backup your most important stuff just in case. I hear about people loosing important stuff all the time due to hard drive crashes.
try the IBM/HITACHI FEATURE TOOL and enable the AAM...
with activated accustic management you won´t hear your maxtor anymore :D
i know that maxtor also has this kind of tool but with this you have to plug your maxtor to the mainboard-ide and as master...
the IBM/HITACHI FEATURE TOOL doesn´t care where you plugged your hdd ;)

It depends on the defintion of silence I guess. I have water cooling so I can hear my Maxtor loud and clear. It sound like a door with old and rusty hinges screeching everytime the hard drive spins
