Dang, I'm so angry. Last night, I was trying to change heatsink/fan and I chipped my CPU's dye a little and it's now a dead CPU! I'm not sure if that's the problem or the motherboard itself. It's not totally cracked, but just chipped very little at one of the corners/sides and now my A7V133 no longer works.
Have anybody have their CPU chipped a little and still works? How much is it safe to chip? I mean, come on, AMD, you can't make a CPU that holds the transistors at the very end of the dye and any chips would harm or kill the CPU instantly. I can't believe what I just did. I'm not sure if I'm more mad at the AMD CPU or myself.
Dang, these socketed CPU sucks! Why not going back to Slot CPU, huh? I just hate it so much and angry/mad at myself at the same time.
i agree. the socket A design SUX
My Duron 600 is probably missing 5% of its total surface area due to edges and corners being chipped off installing and removing an FOP-32E. It works fine. Needless to say, I changed the hold-down methon on the FOP-32, before moving up to a better HSF.
Stop and backtrack. What else did you change when the chip occurred, that could account for your system not working. If that happened to me, I would discharge the bios backup battery and try rebooting. That returns all you settings to the factory defaults. Put all the surface jumpers and switches to the most conservative settings also for the original speed and voltage your cpu is spec'd at.
Save your tears for when they are really warranted.

Well, basically, I didn't do anything unusual. Just changed cpu cooler from a Super Orb to a different one and I had to apply alot of pressure before I could pull out that Super Orb. Let me tell everyone, never buy a Super Orb. It takes so much pressure to take it off once you have it clipped on. Its clip mechanism really sucks. I hate that. I filed a complaint to ThermalTake about their cooler on their website. Hope they read it.
Well, before, when my PC system couldn't boot up, it usually took me several times to turn off and on the PC and then it would come on with the default setting, but this time, I've tried countless times (after the chipped) and it would never come on at all.
I am taking my CPU to a computer lab to have it tested and if it still works on their mobo, it's my mobo that is dead, which I hope it is because it's still under warranty but not my CPU since it is an OEM with only 30 days warranty.
I now wish I have done things a little differently. But I have more complaint for the Super Orb. If not for its bad clip mechanism, I wouldn't have chipped my CPU.
Thanks for the reply, everyone. I really appreciate it.
Hey, I'm very sorry to hear about ur chip.... Those damn Super Orb's! I friend of mine got one too, he got it on, but now he don't dare to take it off, because of the bad clip system.
Maybe we should write a letter to Thermal Take, WITH VERY LARGE FONTS!!!!! If u know what I mean....
I really hate to be the bearer of sad tidings, but the cpu died. Check the following links for other views. A lot of ppl get lucky (extreamly lucky) when they chipped their cpu (and the Chrome orb is the best at this) and the thing still works. However, the vast majority that have the horrible luck and chip the processor, are screwed.

I agree, but don't expect Thermaltake to replace your CPU for you. Since you are installing the unit yerself they are not going to warranty the CPU. I have a Sorb myself, it looks real good sitting up on the shelf collecting dust.

I didn't mean that he should try to get it replaced ( he could try though), I just think that it couldn't hurt to complain a little, so they might start to make good clips for their coolers :)

Thanks all for your wonderful and helpful statements. I did write ThermalTake a very pissed off complaint. I just hope they care enough to read it. Yeah, from now on, the SuperOrb will collect dust on my shelf as well if it does't find itself in the garbage first. It really sux. I can't find any other words to describe how pissed off I am. Thanks again and keep yours working good, alright?

Well, you know, OEM CPU is not warranty through manufacturer, but by the dealer, which they garrantee on 24 hours for my CPU because they saw the SuperOrb I bought at the show and they said with such a huge HSF, they can't give me a thirty-day garrantee if I don't buy the HSF from them. Everything wasn't what a normal day turned out to be, so I just accept their premise and bought the CPU anyway. A bad and very regretable experience, I tell ya.

we need to post on the homepage of this site to NOT buy any kind of orbs!
SO many people get screwed by using those damn things (myself included)....and i know if I would have seen a big DO NOT BUY THESE PRODUCTS area, i would not have wasted my $30!

Sounds like orbs needs to change there HSF.. with all these people having problems... I am surprised there isn't a group law suit.

Yes, yes, yes! A Group Law Suit! That's what we need! Anybody cares to get the case going and then we all will step in? I just wonder if there is a lawyer that is in the same shoes with the rest of us. If there's one, maybe he/she may get the case going then we will follow.
Damn SUPER ORB did it to you and it did it to me too! I lost a 1 ghz T-Bird due to that damn thing. They should be recalled and melted to build a good HSF. Mine chipped a small corner and spewed cilicon. It got VERY hot when powered on and it was VERY dead. Sorry it had to happen to you too. Throw that Super Orb in the trash!

Man, sorry about your cpu. Has anyone ever tried to file the clip a little so it will not require so much force? I killed my duron doing the same thing a few months ago and havent dared even breathe on it wrong since I replaced it,
It may be a dumb question, but sometimes you get lucky ya know
even a blind squirrel finds an acorn once in a while
Yeah, it's AMD's fault!! No wait ... It's the SuperOrb's fault!! YEAH!! The search fro blame is always succesful, so that's what you do. Blame blame blame. Can't be your fault, no way.
Did you knowthe clips can be BENT so they don't fit as tight? WOW!!

i must have taken off my superorb about 20 times now and it is still the same acept that i have water running through it :)

Hey all, just got some info regarding copper 'spacer' or 'shim' that may really help us putting on HSF and taking it out without breaking the CPU's die/core. I'm going to get one ASAP! I wouldn't want to take the risk of chipping the CPU even if I'm doing a good job of taking it our or putting it on. Would you?
The best one seems to come from TweakMonster.com. It doesn't work on SuperOrb HSF, though, because it has ring or the extra layer at the bottom of HSF.
Check it out at:

ORB's are horrible AMD should take them off the list and someone should hack their site so it has a message telling everyone they kill 1 out of every 10 chips they touch.

I think i chiped the corner of my chip, but it works just fine. Might have been when i was using my chrome orb, but iv got a FOP 32 now.
Moment of silence for the poor CPU...

Double post, sorry
what does it do when you try to boot it? Does it beep endlessly? Did you remove the fan with a screwdriver, and if so if you happened to slip and hit the mobo you could have trashed it. I have seen this more than once even though the mobo has no damage to the naked eye, a land could have been nicked
Yea I have (had) a Golden Orb and a tbird 800 greenie that I bought when they were very new. I had heard that the origonal golden orb designed for the celeron, I believe, was bad for AMD chips but that there was a version designed for tbirds. Well I found a site selling "AMD Gorbs" and ordered one. Apparently they were full of ****. I am still using the same CPU but the entire outside edge is now broken away and the corners rounded. I am surprized as hell that it still runs. I finally got rid of that Gorb (it's sitting in front of me on my desk) and got a Thermoengine. I was surprized at the lesser preassure it applied to the core because I am used to the HUGE preassure the Gorb gives.....but the cooling is WAAAAAYYYYY better.
One thing I wanna point out to the guy who said that it's not the manufacturers fault because you can modify your orb. Well first off a good product shouldn't need to be altered to work right and second most people don't know there is a danger till it's too late so why would they alter it if they didn't know the problem beforehand?
Just my opinion of course. <shrugs>
And to think I went out and bought and installed one today!!!
It worked great for me. Went on no problem and dropped 8 degrees off the temp. Got me over a gig.
I guess as long as I don't have to remove it I'm safe.
How did you find that it worked when it was on your machine?

Heh, there is no "master cooler" for AMD chips. They *ALL* crack cores, and if you think that the heatsink you have is "safe" then you're just waiting to get burned. Whenever I put my heatsink on, I always try to do it as easy as possible, with no nonsense involved. AMD CPUs are not good if you're planning on popping the heatsink off every couple hours. I guarantee that if you're doing that, your chip will be toast within a month or so. You're hand will slip and the heatsink will torque down onto the core and GAME OVER.
Forget shims and stuff, the best way to keep your core safe is just to take the utmost care when attaching your heatsink. That and try to avoid attaching and detaching it too often. That said, if you're going to be doing anything to your Heatsink (change fans, etc) take it OFF! Do *NOT* try to change fans with the Heatsink on the CPU. Once again, you're just asking for a dead CPU.

I've busted/cooked 3 good chips...Two chipped (a tb800 and a d800) and cooked a TB800 with a bloody superorb and a shim (the rim on the orb rested on the shim...no contact..sizzle sizzle). All of these have been my own fault...not the chip..not the hsf..not God and not unholy planet alignment...
Looking on the brighter side it has forced me to upgrade...now got a TB1200 running solidly at 1450...need some better cooling though:D

hey guys...my chip died to bcoz i tried to take out that stupid ORB...now i have to try and get warranty for it..bought it a week ago..so i think i could get that warranty.. : )
anyway...bcoz of that i have discovered how to take that
F**kin orb out..but to those who just wanna know..face the clip to u..press it down and just push it back a lil...then its out..no need to put in much effort too..
too bad i disciverd this a lil too late...damn!

Shims are bad for cooling? I want some proof because testers/reviewers indicate that it actually protects the CPU from being crushed or chipped. I want to know your finding or side of the story because I'm thinking of buying a shim very soon.

my temp goes up 2C when i have my shim in place with my FOP38
but i hear if your cooling with a peltier that it helps alot
its more of a game of weather you want a chiped pu that runs a degree or 2 higher
or you take alot of care with your chip when installing a HS/Fan and get the most cooling your cooler can provide

take out the ram and boot up- it should make a few error beeps-that resets the computer(i touched the fan power to ground and then my cpu would not even power up-boot w/o the ram and it reset. try it then clear the cmos-YES i chiped mine while changing the HS and it still works--HAVE FAITH
