fan controllers overpriced - use a variable resistor, but how much resistance?

I am thinking about getting a rediculously loud fan for my cpu that pushes massive amounts of air, and toning it down a bit, but fan busses/controllers are way over-priced, so I want to use a variable resistor from Radioshack. But that leaves me with a question: What kind of maximum resistance are we looking at here?

First you need to know the power rating of your fan (it usually says on the label, ".6W" for example) then you can download this nifty fan resistor calculator that was mentioned in this thread. Voila, you're good-to-go!

Overpriced?
Look HERE!

When one of my home-made fan controllers burned out a few weeks back and I needed to get a new one, I found out about the units I linked to.

It would cost me MORE to make 4 of my own controllers than that thing costs- and I wouldn't have bi-colored leds

This works great with a Tornado.

why are you getting a 'rediculously loud fan' and then toning it down?

why not just get a quieter fan?
