i need some help determinig to see if you guys think that my processor is burnt up or not...i cant test it cause i had to RMA my mobo so here are some pics of the amd xp 3000+ i have please let me know what you think....note that there is still some residue for artic silver on the chip i am still needing to clean off but look at the back and the small black ring around the core, if it is burnt will amd replace it ...the amd heat sink was used and was seated properly...this happend when i tried to update the bios on the mobo and i restarted and it picekd it up as a 1300+ and then shut off and i noticed a burnt scent from the board...thinking it might have been the bios....who knows i may be this instead please help me out...note that the atric silver was not installed like seen in the pic it was put on the correct way...thats just from useing acetone to get it off...need to do it a little better

Your CPU looks in good shape. I dont see this black ring you are talking about maybe you could circle it? Do you happen to have an old athlon or duron you could stick in your mobo to see if it will boot?

Errr... I forgot what RMA means. I think that means you returned your mobo?

The black stuff is actually a sealant applied in the manufacturing process. nothing to worry about, unless it's seperating from the face of the chip itself. If it does, don't watercool. just a slight amount of dampness gets in there and......POOF!! There goes the chip....
You stated that you are air-cooling...good. stick with air and don't clock it too much to start with, just to make sure.

It was recognised at 1300+ AFTER you flashed the bios? Its fine.. just Up the FSB back to 166 and it should be 3000+ again.

Agreed, I have the same stuff on my 1700 and 2500s. I believe it's some sort of sealer as well.
