View Full Version : Removing SuperOrb Safely. Can it be done?
I'm getting ready to replace my Superorb. Got some defroster repairer to redo my L1s while it's off, got a switch to enable me to toggle my Delta from 7 to 12 volts (hee, winter/summer switch). Got sandpaper from 600 to 1500 grit (looking for 2000) for lapping (got a Vantec). Already done through the 1200.
But several threads on this forum have heart-rending stories on chipping their TB or Duron and that I can do without. Has anyone managed to remove a Superorb without killing the chip? I guess I have to remove the board just to be on the safe(r) side.
Any tips?

Hehhehhee....the one that chipped his TBird 1.2 Ghz 266FSB is me! I'm still in a pissed off mood. You can actually safely take it off with care. And don't put it back on ever again! Read the many replies under my "I'm Dead....." post and you will have a better idea. Also, go and read my other post at AMDMB.COM at:

I think someone posted some useful instructions on how to safely take out a Super Orb.
Good luck!
Be DAMN careful when removing that HSF. I lost a 1ghz T-bird due to a Super Orb as well and I DON'T want to see anyone else do the same. Be sure to apply even pressure when taking the clamp off (don't just push down on one side). It can be done and if you are careful, it is unlikely anything bad will happen. Good luck, and get rid of that HSF!
Push down evenly seems to be the key. I wanted to get it done today, since there is a PC fair this evening and just in case I kill it I can get a replacement fast. Alas, I won't have the lapping done in time. Oh well, there is another PC fair next weekend. Part of me wants to destroy it so I can get an AXIA one...

I removed the Orb safely and replaced with Super Orb .. the Orb came off without a problem and I want to put some AS on the Super Orb .. it is no harder than Orb you need the right tools.Remember to push down then push tab tight against the Super Orb then I use my roach clips to pull it out just enuff and viola

I've installed and removed many Super Orbs. So far I haven't had a problem.Just put even pressure on the top of the clip and, if necesary, use a small screwdriver to pull the tab away from the ZIF socket.

I did remove it with no problem. The little screwdriver pushing out on the clip makes it very easy. Thanks to all.
