i have a maxtor 160 hard drive and i recently just purchased the abit nf7-s and xp2500+ cpu but basically i want to format my maxtor before i install my new motherboard and cpu. i open up my command promt and try and format and it says this "Format cant run b/c it is in use by another process. Format may run if this volume is dismounted first. And so I try that and it gives me this. Cant lock the drive, it is still in use. I know in 98 I can just restart in DOS but WIN2k doesnt have that option. I am just wondering what I need to do so I can format my hd before I install everything. Thanks.

why dont you just boot from cd...and reinstall windows...format it there? you need to reinstall windows anyways, might as well do that.
