I have a PIII 800@896 112MHz and i want to go to athlon... if i was to go to athlon what could i get out of my 1GIG with and without any cooling and with AXIA or No AXIA.

The Motherboard i was going for is a Aopen AK73-1394

and i have
512MB Dane-elec PC133 CAS 3 i think
Geforce2 GTS

Kerman,
If you're a gamer, then Don't go with AMD chips both T-bird or Durons. Their overal gaming performance is poor.. P3s are the choice.

I must highly disagree. The PIII is more of an "office" CPU and is more suited twords running apps such as Word. The Athlon is a serious gaming CPU that runs very well in all games providing you have the right equpiment to back it up (e.g. a good video card). With the appropriate cooling on a 1 gig CPU you should easily hit 1.25 ghz.

For a less controversial reply. I just got my AXIA 1.0G / 266 "red core" Tbird and right out of the box, it does 10x133 @ 1.7V with 2 no-name pc133CL3 sticks running CL2. Should do better when my PC150CL2 stick arrives tomorrow.

my T Bird 950 @ 950 100 FSB (200DDR)run quake3 and UT faster than my P3 700 @ 1008 ( 144 FSB) so i know my t bird 950 @ 1200 ( 133 FSB) will smoke any P3 benchmark in 3d games

i have a g force 2 gts 64 meg and i play Q3 @ 1024 x 768 32 bit everything high detail and i run around playing between 180 fps to 350 fps

no P3 of mine could ever get close to that

but not to argue anymore......... a T Bird 1 gig should do 1200 mhz EASY and should do more

have fun.......

My 100 Mhz FSB 800 does 1000 MHZ(7x143) stable as a rock. You should be able to hit 1100 Mhz easy just buy good pc 133 memory.

Uhhh, where have you been living for the past year, under a rock? PIIIs haven't been better for games since Athlons went to on-die cache. Athlons totally blow PIIIs out of the water in FPU operations. They run faster and cost less!

It's all in the codes. AXIA can do up to 1466 MHz or so. AXHA, AVHA, AVIA may do in the 1333 MHz or so range. If you get something less like an AJFA you may not get too far. Check the CPU database and see for yourself. 1 GHz is definitely a better buy than 900 MHz because 1 gigz are almost always copper and thus better overclockers. If you want an AXIA for sure go with 1333 MHz chip.

I know from reading and stuff Athlons are faster then most intels CPU's but i am reluctant to change because i have my PC running pretty smooth getting around 250FPS in Half-life@ 1280*960.... but i want to go to athlon because i have the second from fastest version of coppermine PIII thus my next upgrade would be have to be P4 if i was to stay with intel but if u go to MADONION you can see then most Athlons kill PIII's and P4's my best results are 7590 but athlon 1GIGs get around 10000 if i stick with the same GPU.

Is that with or without extensive cooling?

I just got the same results with pretty much the same setup with my 1.2. Same ram and same speed 133x10, Actually I bumped it up this morning to 137x10=1370. gonna let it burn for the day and bump it up a bit more tonight. I think AMD machines are a better choice for gaming where the Intel's seem to have the 'office'.

I am athlon fan-not that intel is bad but pound for pound AMD kills, A tbird is the Lennox Lewis of CPU's

Owning a p3 800@896 and a Tbird 1000@1300......The AMD system is the way to go.......unlock that L1 cache and crank that mother up!!!

Right so we've established that the Athlon is a way better CPU.

I have just ordered my athlon 1Ghz what can i do to overclock it with Intel u just Whip up the FSB is it the same process with the AMD and at what point would i need cooling and where would i get it from (UK only)

And i'd rarther not Attack the CPU internally.

And the most important thing is what Motherboard should i get The Aopen cam out the best for overclocking at www.tomshardware.com but are there any other good MB's out there

If you have a 1.0G/200, then it has the multiplier L1 traces cut for 10x. In that case, just play with the FSB. If you have a 1.0G/266, like I got, then all the L1 traces are cut and you'll need to bridge them, bump the multiplier and then play with the FSB. Out of the box, my 1G/266, after a bridge job, goes 10x133 @ 1.7V with no-name PC133CL3 memory set to CL2. Rock solid. The Fedex man just brought my Tonicomm 256M PC150CL2/PC166CL3 stick. When I get home from work, I'll see what this buys me. I am hoping to get up in the 1500 zone with CL2, assuming the CPU won't hold me back.

So in theory if i bought a 1.1Ghz that would 11*100 =1.1Ghz and if i clocked it at 11*133 =1463

But then there would be some serious cooling!

With an adequately ventilated case, any of the better HSFs should handle 1463Mhz, assuming you don't have to use 2.2V on the core to get it. I think a lot of people could benefit from a little homework. Download Radiate.exe. Calculate the heat your partiular setup will generate. Measure your interior case temperature. Buy an HSF that satisfies the c/w cooling requirement for your setup. Not as much JuJu and blue smoke as you might think. Shoot for 45C or less.

Quake 3 is the only game the P3 does good on.The only reason the P3 does somewhat well on it is because of the SSE instruction set used in it. Quake 3 is designed to run well on a Pentium, so it does. Most games will run much better on an Athlon system. You get alot more performance for your buck with AMD. And now with the KT133A chipset, you can run the fsb at insane speeds along with mult adjustments. And last but not least, with a good 1GHZ(AXIA) you should be able to get close to 1.4GHZ or so with some snazzy cooling.

Would moving to the artic then removing my case lid help?

What Fan do you think would do the job?

I was thinking about getting the Coolmaster EP5-6I11-A1 (FCPGA-1.2Ghz SoA-1.33Ghz)
Recommended by AMD!!!

Use Arctic Silver 2 thermal paste, everywhere I read its the best paste(I have some on the way). As far as the hsf goes, I have not heard many good things about the Cooler Master hsf's. I have seen the best results with the Globalwin's:FOP 32, FOP 38, and the WBK. I want to get the WBK, I have read alot of reviews on it and haven't seen a bad word written about it, it seems to be very highly recommended. Good Luck!!

Dude!
You've already got a killer system. What more could you possibly need except an Athlon case badge? I'm no Intel fan, but for crying out loud, unless you're folding some serious proteins, or converting ass-loads of movies to MP4, you don't need an upgrade!

If you're insistent on getting rid of your old computer, send it to me and I'll give it to some one who needs one.
