when i start up a 3d application the screen goes blank but theres sound

what causes this? my friends computer in battlefield 1942 whenever he starts it up the screen goes blank but sound starts.. i tried the allow all refreshrates 1 and it didnt help, i also reinstalled the video card drivers in same mode and uninstalled them first as well and it didnt help.. is the vid card dying or smth?

he has a ti200, amd xp 1700, 384 megs ram

There is only ONE WAY to find out. Swap in a different vid card and see if it works. BF1942 will bring any failing vid card to it's knees.

My dying 4200 only screwed up in BF1942 but worked otherwise. I swapped in a 4600 that worked fine. Conclusion: vid card dying
Remedy: got new card
