View Full Version : need most powerful 80 mm in the world
I need a very high power 80mm fan. I want atleast 60 CFM from it. I don't care about the noise. This is for a dual processor MB in a fairly tight case. The CPUs each have a hose feeding air to them from the front of the case. I can't put the side panels on becasue there will be too much air pressure inside the case. So I need a extreamly power fan to get rid of the air. Also I can't put any fans on the top or side of the case because this computer stands in a rack with computers above and to the sides and below it. The rear has 1 80mm opening.

The Smart Fan II at full speed gives you 75CFM. It's not as noisy as a tornado. It's actually pretty quiet for me. you an also go with a noisy 80mm Tornado for 84CFM, if you'd like.

Anything higher than 84 CFM? Remember this a server room, noise is irrelavent.

From what've I've seen by looking through various webpages, I can't say that I've seen any 80mm fans higher than 84cfm.

if u really want high powered i could mod u an 80 mm fan with a 24,000 rpm motor on it but needs 18 volts to run it will run on 12 but wont be @ 24,000 rpm t will be a good150 cfm fan and loude
go with the vantec tornado.
another vote for the Tornado here. Its definatly the most powerful 80mm fan you can pick up under normal circumstances

Go with vantec stealth... nice and quiet :D
hehe, just kidding. tornado is what your looking bulk88.
yeah tornado,, lol let him mod u one,, id love to see the pics and its ratings...
Is there anyway you could mod a 92mm fan in there? Cause the 92mm tornado flows 119 cfm.

I think I read something somewhere this one time (deliberately vague lol) about removing the sticker on the fan to get to its insides and then removing a small plastic clip/disc/thing and this made the fan spin faster, thus moving more air.
Does anyone know what I am talking about or is the 60 hour week I just worked finally affecting me?

The closest you can get in a computer is either 17v (+5v and -12v)or 24v (+12v -12V). No 18v. Also where the heck am I to find a 24,000 RPM fan?
Also I can't fit anything except a 80mm fan becasue the screw cut outs are for 80mm. I think a 92mm would fit I am not taking the chance of it physically not having room in the case (I can drill the holes fine).

If you want some serious airflow try to mod one of these (http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXEPZ5&P=0) into a fan. 42,000+rpm :D . I too used to play around with RC cars but had to get a cheaper hobby. They will be loud as hell in an enclosed room!

Find the exact center so the fan doesnt woble all over the place. Drill a hole just a little too small for the tip of the motor to fit through then coat the tip of the motor in more jbweld and shove it through the hole. Make sure when you drill the hole you dont go thru the plastic. Let that sit over night then with more epoxy glue the motor back to the frame of the fan. You may need to cut the back out and slide it thru then glue around the edge so it doesn't move and then let that sit for a day. Wire it up then get a bay bus cause this thing will be loud enough to wake the dead. I used one in my old rc car and could still here it at half power 2 blocks down the street.

I don't know about having that thing near a computer (think about the magnets).

The magnets are stationary. The coils move inside it. - I don't think it would cause much interference ;)
A simple solution is to just take a tornado and volt mod it like this (http://www.afrotechmods.com/fanmod.htm). 24V will probably heavily shorten its life, but I should think that 17V would be fine.

In all the fans I have seen, the magnets spin while the coils are fixed to the case.

Why not just take one of these fans (http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/delffb1212eh.html) and use a 120mm to 80mm adapter, or if it can't fit dead center over the 80mm hole, make your own little duct to funnel the air out. 190cfm should be more than enough.

True that, but for ball bearing PC fans. The RC one that was suggested has the magnets round the outside because it requires less circuitry to route the current properly if the coils are in the middle ;)

If you actually take a fan apart, you will find out that the magnets are around the outside, with the coils and electronics in the middle.
Yeah just get that Tornado 80mm or the Delta... both powerful fans.
Let's not forget the fan's purpose- it's not a noise-making contest, nor is a ridiculous amount of CFM needed. It's just to cool a server rack sufficiently. I would say that rules out funky drill bits mounted to a 80mm frame, if only for reliability concerns.
In the unlikely event that these fans cannot provide sufficient cooling, I'd suggest turning up the airco in that server room a bit, before going all wild-eyed on the fan. ;)

Your best bet would be to mod the 92MM Toronado to fit. They are not much bigger. The mod would be easy. 119CFM should make a noticeable difference.
I don't think the increase of 9 CFM (80MM Smart Fan II 75CFM vs. 80MM Toronado 84CFM) is going to be enough for your application.

I just got my 80mm Tornado. It is MUCH more powerful than my TT SCF2. I can't even keep control of it in my hand. Though it still isn't what I need. I need to exhaust 3 TT SCF2s (2 to force air down to the cpus (with Volcano 11s at the cpu runing full speed)), 1 forcing air to the HD mounting area) from my system. All of the TT SCF2s are running at full speed (75 CFM each). This is a ducting mod I am doing to my cpus (this is a SMP system). And I need something to remove all that hot air (the cpus are 2 barton 2500s (hand picked stepings) oclk'ed to 2,128 right now at 1.7v and runnning at 54C), plus 2 200gb hard drives (not yet in but they are 7200RPM models).

good idea on mounting the rad. how's your flow pumping up hill into the rad and all?
if you just want an 80 get the tornado. that's the only answer for you if you can only use an 80mm fan. if you're open to suggestion check out 92mm tornadoes or look into a dual pump single rad water cooling setup. the water setup would deal with the heat from that box very well.

My parents won't allow it saying it will leak and flood the system and their money on the SMP rig went down the drain, litterally.

Have you considered modding the sides or top of the case to accept fans. If you could fit in the Tornado and a couple of High flow 60mm or even more tornados you could increase your airflow with ease. If space in the case is really tight you could put the fan outside the case instead of inside it.

didn't he say it was surrounded by computer on all sides or something to that extent? That's why he couldn't get fans on the side or something...Anyway, if you can get a 80mm adapter for a 120mm it could be a good idea to get that 190CFM fan. You know...some people don't even have the collective power of that fan. With all their fans they don't even hit 150CFMs. Then you get a 190CFM fan, and i believe it's more silent than the 80mm tornado(not sure about the 92mm)
Well the front of this case is butcherd and has fans blowing air down ducts to the cpus. I can't put anything on the sides or top becasue this tower case stands next to other computers that will block it. I guess I will by a 92mm fan and see how it goes.

The problem with that rc motor is because it is so powerful it will need the brushes replaced and comm cut about every 4 hours because that motor pulls so much power. It will also destroy the fan blades because it has so much torque. Rc motors are built for speed and performance not for long life.
p.s. You whould have a hard time truing to mount one of those and not have it come loose and completely destroy your computer.

I believe they do make Brushless motors now. It has been so long that I was in the RC hobby that I do not know what their advantages are though. My last car (which I still have) was a Losi XX4.

brushless would work but the motor costs like $120 and you need a speed controller which is around $120 plus you would need radio gear. So it would be too expencive to go the RC motor route. I would just cut a hole in the case and put on a 92mm Tornado.
