If you're using a serial mouse, you probably need a mouse driver (not one for the COM port specifically though). What're the specs of the system? Operating system?

p 233, 160 ram , build in video/audio, etc

really old stuff, the mouse is a ps/2 type and I got an adaptor for it so it would go into the com1 port, since that computer doesn't have a ps/2 slot

You need a serial mouse driver for DOS. Windows 95 and up should provide one for it though. Serial mouse drivers are pretty much one size fits all so any OS aside from DOS should load it automatically.
