alright please bear with me my network wiring setup is a bit funky.

my lan runs through my whole property, 3 buildings total.

my net comes in our guest house where the modem is and runs into a hub that splits the line off in 2 directions. one line goes to the main house the other goes to the garage. the house only has one computer, the guest house has none (server coming soon), and the garage has 2 comps currently hooked up through another hub.

comp1 has kingston 10/100 pci nic
comp2 has onboard 10/100 nic
comp3 has some major brand 10/100 pci nic
both hubs are netgears one is 4 port one is 8, both 10/100 capable

now my dsl modem has the typical power, sys, activity, 10mb,100mb. lights on it. the 10mb light glows but the 100mb doesn't. thats how i know its not running at 100mb. also the fact that file transfers take a long time.i transfer alot of 700mb+ files over the network so every little bit will help.

how do i go about changing from 10mb to 100mb? i played with the nic settings in device manager and changed both comps in the garage to 100mb full duplex but neither comp liked that and both dropped off the network when applied.

i'm not really sure where else to look. let me know if i forgot to mention anything about my setup.

thx.

When you mentioned your dsl modem did you mean a cable/dsl router or the actual modem? DSL doesn't provide enough bandwidth to need 100mb connection. The actual modem has a 10 or 100 light on it?

Without knowing the exact hardware you are running its hard to say. If your hubs are not auto sensing they may detect one 10mb device and bump everyone down to 10.

When you use a HUB, not only is the 10 or 100Mb/sec bandwidth shared between all ports, but they all slow down to match the slowest connection. If you use a SWITCH (or a router with integrated switch), each port has access to it full speed even if there is a slower connection attached.

If you have done that then I would either question if the hubs are 100mbit (model #?) or as you stated that the wires run all around the house, that if they may be bad enough that the computers can't negoitate at 100mbit and fall back down to 10mbit.
