All the ISPs I have used or heard of do not care if you are using a router. They just will not support it if you have connectivity problems to the NET.
If you are having problems then they will always as you to connect your system directly to the modem before they will even troubleshoot the issue.
Anway, if you never tell them they can never tell.
If you want to know for sure just call the sales department and act like you are a new customer and ask.
I have roadrunner, no they dont care they just wont help you set it up. They will only connect 1 computer without a router to their stuff. he rest is up to ou

just unhook one of your computers where you want the cable modem and tell em that you only want the internet on that one ;) the guys will have no problem with it because you pay for a certain amount of bandwidth so it is not like you are getting extra ip addresses and each one has just as much bandwidth as the next... welcome to the real internet ;)

RR here in tampa says that you can have 4 computers running on your IP address if remember correctly.

They will charge you a monthly fee if its their router that they install.
However, if its your own equipment they won't charge you anything but the standard monthly fee.
and Whats the deal with Tampa? Its not like they can tell how many computers are connected, since the bandwith gets split between all of them anyways.. so it shouldn't matter if you have 1 or 100.

Wouldn't the router hide the other machines? It seems to me that RR would only see the IP for the router and none for the machines connected behind it. Does that sound right?

The only thing you need to be sure of is that most of these isps do not let you share your connection to your neighbors. Running a cat5 window to window, or even wireless is a violation of your agreement, shareing within your household is allowed as far as I can tell.
Yeah I have road runner and I have 4 pc's hooked up through a router, but when they came to my house to fix a bad splitter I just took everything down and then hooked it up when they left.
