View Full Version : Need a new Pump
Hey guys, I haven't posted in a while because all my stuff has been running great but now i have a problem....
First off, I have an evaporator tower, running to a split Y to a danger den maze 2 and another for the northbridge (also dangerden), pretty nice setup with allmost all copper piping and soldered by me.
I was away for the weekend and came back today, hit the power button on my PC and heard the powersupply fan turn on and the HDs spin up but my pump didn't kick on like it should have (i have a relay to control a power outlet on the side of the case). So Turned it all off and checked my pump into a different outlet, nothing. My pump is dead.
I don't know much about water pump so is there a way to fix em? If not where is a good place to go and buy a pump? (online or B/M)

What kind of pump?
Got any pics of you Evaporator?
I can't remember the brand of the pump, but i think its a 360 GPH sub pump, it wasn't very expensive, I just want to get my PC back up so i don't have to type on this tiny laptop keyboard.
Sorry, don't have any pics, all ask around and see if my neighbors have a digicam
Some good pump are here (http://www.cooltechnica.com). I'd also check out aquarium supply places online. Petsmart also carries Danner pumps which is where I got mine locally.

Via Aqua pumps are on sale HERE (http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?siteid=6&pCatId=8164)
thanks guys, i went over to petsmart but i was 1/2 hour too late, i'll go back tomorrow and see if they have a decent pump.
Also, does anyone know if my pump is fixiable. It doesn't do anything when its plugged in.
A lot of these pumps are disposable, meaning they're not really designed to be repaired. :( If you're going to Petsmart, I recommend a Danner Supreme Mag Drive Pump #3.

I recommend NOT getting a Via Aqua, I had one in my setup for about 2 months & then bought my Danner 3, the Via claims to have great GPH & great head but it sucked in my system & got VERY warm to the touch as it's designed to be run submerged, not inline. It is very inexpensive though.:D
This (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=217999) pump appears to be a very nice choice. I ordered it today, so I'll post results soon. If it lives up to its claims, what it should be is a very cheap, powerful and silent pump.
if you're going to run submerged and want cheap, you can use the via aqua.. i'ts like 11 bucks at www.drfostersmith.com shipping is a little steep, but for less than 20, you can get a decent pump.

The Danner would be a good choice for the tower. You'll want a pump with a lot of head to get decent flow through the tower.
Why are you running the Y splitter? I have a feeling you'd get better performance without it, unless your northbridge block is really restrictive.

Actually i get better performance and flow using the spliter. The waterblocks are very restrictive, actually the most restrictive piece in any setup. So by using a Y spliter and going through 2 blocks seperatly, i increased the flow by almost double (i think its actually 1.5 or so). In a water evapoorator tower more flow is better because the water is really only being cooled during its decent down the tower so the more water being sent down the tower in a given time equals more cool. I ran just a cpu waterblock for almost a year and then adding the Y and northbridge block and it droped my cpu temps by a few degrees and also took out one more fan. Running the blocks in a series is not a good idea because the hot water would then have to run right over the next block, parallel is the only option unless you would want to run 2 pumps and what not.
I agree....Via Aquas should be avoided.....the heat and noise are the main reasons to stay away.
You should also look into eheim pumps. Uber quiet pumps.
I love mine.
Anyways....good luck.
OK, i went to petsmart and picked up and Pondmaster sump pump. 250 GPH. Its got a 3 year warranty included. I'm gonna hook my system back up and see how this pump does. The lady at petsmart said i could bring it back if it sucks.
Anyone use a pondmaster before?
Oh sweet, i just realized that the pondmaster was a danner, awesome. But, its the model 2 instead of the 3, the only ones they had instock were a 2 and the 5. the 5 woulda prolly been to much, hopefully the 2 will work.
This cord on the pump is 18' long and i only need to go 2 feet, anyone cut their cord and resolder it to the length they need?
Got everything working again, had to take a trip to Lowes and get some new fittings for this pump. I'm getting decent flow and the pump is silent, quieter than my old pump. Getting idle temps at about 32C, with the fan on my tower off. A full do a full load run when i play some MOHAA in a bit. Thanks for the help guys.

You could cut the cord and use a 3-prong plug that screws open. It will be alot better than soldering it. I forget what they're called but their great for what you were talking about.
