View Full Version : My pump died...

...but no damage! Actually, it probably died about 3 weeks ago.
I noticed my temps had gone up, and were running somewhere around 48C. I just figured my heatercore was plugged up with dust, so I took my whole system apart today to clean out the HC. When I took the case side off, I noticed the pump wasn't humming. "Hmmm," I thought, "interesting..." The pump was not running at all.
I guess I lucked out, and the natural convection currents were keeping the CPU cool enough. I have my BIOS set to shut down if the CPU temp reaches 65C, but it never did. Luckily, the channels on my WB are mounted vertically, not horizontally. I think this was the saving grace.
However, I think I'm gonna get me a normally closed relay and buzzer to alert me if the pump ever fails again.

What kind of pump was it?

it was a no-name submersible pump modded for inline use. I guess it was worth the $10, it lasted about a year and a half.
heheheh....well...that's the problem...it's a submersible probably not rated for inline use.
Anyways, some pumps come with good warranties. Of course, you pay for it.
The eheim is my choice. It's also quiet. You can't hear it on my setup (I had a Via Aqua before and that sh*t was LOUD).

Glad to hear there were no other losses :D
I'd say that was a pretty good deal for $10- about a year and a half? That's about 14 months longer than my Maxi Jet lasted......and that piece of junk cost twice as much. :)
I'm in the market for another pump now myself- trying to decide between what I know works well and reliable and trying something else that is popular......

I am starting to get parts for my custom water-cooling setup. And a pump is my first buy. What do you guys think: Eheim 1250, Maxijet 1000, Hydor L30 or Via Aqua 1300?
48C isn't too bad for a pumpless system! I don't think all watercooling systems will be able to hang in there with total pump failure.
I don't have my PC on 24/7, so I have a great natural relay system; whenever I power on my PC the power strip switch has to be pressed, upon which the pump begins to humm straight away, before the PC's fans drone the noise out. Obviously, no humming noise is warning enough for me. :)

If you want absolute quality, I'd prefer the Eheim 1250 or Hydor L30 over the others.

wow, 48C pumpless is pretty impressive. This is only the 2nd story I've heard of where a pump failure did not result in a catastrophic failure, or at least a thermal shutdown. Hoot's "pumpless test/family emergency" was the other.

I kicked my pump's power cord off of my power stip and it only took 20sec for me to get a memory dump screen in XP. It didn't even reach 48c but I guess my tbird is very close to it's limit. I'm doing the relay thing when I recieve my ehiem.

It only took a couple minutes of running without the pump on for my computer to freeze at a lan party.
You are lucky, this is what happened to me about a year ago...

The first mod i did after that was to wire up a relay for the pump.

BIOS setting, "Upon power failure: Turn on? Stay off?"
that's why your computer turned itself on when the power blinked. I had the same thing happen to me but luckily, nothing got fried.

I had a melt down with a Volcano 7+ on my old amd rig. Started Norton up to scan ofr a virus I thought had infected my puter, left for the evening. When I woke up went to get on the puter and nothing but blank screen.
Looked inside and fan had melted into HS. Needless to say my 2200 was charred on the bottom and didn't work after, but luckily I think it happened only an hour or so before I woke up becasue my puter was still running, just no cpu fan and blank screen.
The auto shut down on fan fail in bios was enabled, but didn't seem to work.
I now use a relay with a 115vac switch and two indicator lights to verify my pump has power. One 115vac light and another 12v light to indicate when the PSU is on. Still wouldn't help to shut down the puter in the event of pump failure though. I like the flow meter, but your MOBO still has to do its job.

I use 2 via1300's and have had no problems. I do use two of them, that way if one dies the other keeps pumping.

Hey Neo, since you hooked me up with some barbs, I'm sure I can hook you up with a good replacement submerged pump. If you're interested, PM me for details.

Internal diameter of the Flow Meter's barbed connectors is 5mm
Ouch that sounds like a major flow restriction. I believe 1/2 barbs are 10.5 mm inside.

This happend to me as well.
I accidentally tripped the power cord for my pump. Didn't notice it at the time. Later, I was wondering why the temp have gone to 50, and checked. THen noticed that the pump was not running. The amazing thing is, Before this W/C setup, my PC was running with Volcano 9 (with smartfan). My temps used to be mid 50s with lot of fan sound.

Almost a year has passed! My 1250 is still running strong and I've not had to test the pumpless operation mode. :)
