Im gonna try to o/c an athlon xp 2500 to a 3000 or 3200, which of those fans would do the cooling job well enough?
thanks for any help.

None of the above. Thermalright SK7+some random 80mm fan should do you right up.
SK-7 (http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?DEPA=0&submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1444&description=&srchFor=sk-7)
Heatsink: $20
Fan: and old one will do, but for $15 get a
Smart case fan (not coolmod) (http://www.newegg.com/app/Viewproduct.asp?DEPA=0&submit=manufactory&catalog=62&manufactory=1379&description=smart&srchFor=case)
If you want to OC that Barton to any speed above stock you will need some decent cooling.

i know about the sk-7 and stuff, but..
ah screw it. How would the sk7 perform with this fan attached to it?
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=11-999-051
someone who commented on that fan said this..
"These fans are awesome for keeping the CASE cool... Looks good in a window case (Chieftech Dragon) too... But, they are NO GOOD for cooling CPUs faster that 900MHz. (as some heatsink manufacturers want you to believe.) Other than that, they are quiet enough, put out enough light that those internal case lights won't be needed, and keep the inside of the case below 30deg C. "
right or wrong?

I don't know exactly but 29CFM is not versus any pressure drop, like that created by a heatsink. Slap it on there and the back pressure would make the CFM drop a bit, hurting performance. One with a little more speed and watts should do fine.
what about that 39cfm sunon that like hundreds of people have?

how about one of these fans? (im trying to stay under $10 for the fan, on a tight budget you know?)

how would i be able to keep that fan at around 4000 rpm without buying a manual controller for it?
Helgaiden
08-11-03, 03:11 PM
what about the YS tech fan?
it pushes almost the same amount of air as the smart fan does and it has manual control.

The thermaltake smartfan comes WITH a thermal controller and a manual variable resistor.
Helgaiden

awesome then.
(talking bout the smartfan 1, right?)

oops no - the SFII does, but the SFII with no coolmod is $12. If your budget can stretch that far, get it. I have one and it rocks :D
The link is in my first post
The SK-7 is cheaper at svc.com Currently, $15.99. Add a $5 fan and you're all set. :)
Helgaiden

it seems the SF1 comes with a manual controller though by what some customers on newegg say...
"I put this on top of my Thermalright SK-7. Using the thermal probe I can have the fan adjust to the heat of the CPU.
I also have one installed using the dial-an-rpm and that works good if you don't want much noise becaus you can set the RPMs to like 3500 or 4000 and it's not very loud. Cranked all the way up it does 5500 RPMs and it sounds like a hair dryer"

Yes I have found that with my SFII the follwing noise levels apply:
1800-2400RPM - dead silent
2500-3000RPM slight hum
3500-4000 tolerable swoosh
4500-5000 a tornado would be hard to hear over it
"I put this on top of my Thermalright SK-7. Using the thermal probe I can have the fan adjust to the heat of the CPU
This is the little thermistor that adjusts the speed of the fan. The guy probably used something like a rheobus to control the temperature manually but I don't think the SFI comes with one. SFII does though.

hmm....alrighty then. sfII it is.
still though, i at least would have liked to know what was the best HSF i listed on my first post.
any help?

Probably the Speeze, but I doubt that it would adequately cool a 3000+
Helgaiden
08-11-03, 04:33 PM
one of the reviews says this about the speeze.
"Never buy on hype. Check the specs. You'll see when you click on the product link that the heatsink's rated thermal resistance is 0.508c/w, which is no better than heatsinks that come with the retail processors. I regret buying this with an oem cpu. On the positive side, the fan blows quite a bit of air at near 38cfm and is really quiet."
everyone else seems to have liked it though. *shrugs*
Take a look at the Vantec Aeroflow. It does a good job and runs fairly quiet. I have one on a XP2500 running at 2.31 (46 centigrade under load) and another on a 2.6C running at 3.26 and 42 centigrade (had it higher but chickened out).
I even bought several of the TMD fans and replace case fans with them, they work great.

I ordered two of these Thermaltake A1357 80x80x25mm Smart Case Fan II (http://www.bestbyte.net/Product.cfm?ProductID=884&CategoryID=8&Keyword=) for $7.99 each plus $.50 shipping. How does that compare to the other SFII?
Helgaiden
08-13-03, 02:37 PM
7.99? thats a good price for the SFII. o_O. Wonder if anything is differrent about it.
Killer deal. I just ordered one myself. Price may be incorrect though. The volume prices are higher than the single unit price.
its cuz they dont have shipping numbnuts :)

hey seer, how has that ys tech fan been treatin ya? i been thinking of getting that fan over the smartfan I because of the manual control.

Say what? $7.99 + .50 = $8.49
Volume pricing for 5 is $9.75
Whether they charge for shipping or not which sounds better to you?

Maybe it's a special. Oftentimes when sales are low for small volumes, the retailer will drop the individual price below the volume price, and a lot of time they'll apply the individual price to all volumes. Notice that the individual price is in a separate element of the page, whereas the volume pricing is in the same font, size, and area as the description. Depending on the site's e-market system, the volume prices might be more permanent than the individual pricing.

I have that and an SK-7 on a Celeron 1.2, and it did a fairly good job, keeping it @ ~1.5 below 40 C (no case, no other airflow around it). I haven't gotten around to serious tweaking with it, though, so I haven't pushed it to its maximum. Id rate it as straight average, moderate noise, moderate cooling.

by the time my i order the setup, if the SFII is out of stock im going with the YS tech fan because it has a manual control.
The SFII can be controlled manually as well and has a higher CFM on max setting.

You've gotta be kidding me! The thing is friggin quiet compared to a Tornado! Even a 92mm Tornado at 5V was louder than that! The Smart Fan II has the best noise/performance ratio, IMO. And that price for the SFII is from Best Byte Computers (http://www.bestbyte.net).

Well know I know what to get for the SK-7 for maximum performance :burn:

I've just bought a 'Coolermaster Aero 7+' (for £21.62 GBP) to replace my 'Akasa 785cu with 80mm Coolermaster fan', and it's taken 7C off my load temp (42C down to 35C with case temp at 37C)
Don't know wether this'll help you at all, just thought I'd mention it. :D
P.S. I'm running as 2800xp Barton
P.P.S. There's a review here http://www.a1-electronics.net/Heatsinks/2003/CMaster_Aero7_Apr03.shtml
i use a slk-800, adn an enermax 80mm
for a fan, thats always under ~20db, it offers great cooling

i read in a review that the Aero 7 Lite cooled a little better than the Aero 7+. Weird, eh?

Also wierd the way that his load temps are higher than his board temps...
