View Full Version : Too much antifreeze?
What's the optimum mix for this stuff that yeilds max performance with max bug-killing and anti-corrosive power? Right now I have a pretty strong mix, I don't know exactly how much but maybe 60/40.
So I was thinking, does the antifreeze work better or worse than plain old water?

Too much will degrade heat transfer I believe. I use 90/10~. It seems to keep out the buggies and no corrosion so far and my temps are the same vs 100% distilled. Check out the coolant sticky (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?threadid=39039) ...
Cool, I thought my ratio was bad. Corrosion is the main reason I use the stuff, so next time I'll drop it to 10% or less (I'm about to revamp my system).

I'm only using water, what kind of temp drops could I expect from adding some coolant?
Temps tend to get worse with most additives, but additives kill germs and prevent corrosion.

your temp will go "up", not drop.
Anti-freeze is a big no no. Use it a little bit is ok, not too much. Antifreeze will severely restrict flow rate and also heat transfer performance is lower than the water. You get the best performance from plain water. You use a "litte bit" of anti-freeze(90% water + 10% antifreeze) would be ok. even just 5%.
Remember, Anti freeze is not to drop your temperature down, but it is used for under extreme conditions such as below freezing temps or extreme high temperatures. Antifreeze is more favorable for cooling off high temperatures used in automobiles.

Nevermind, I'll just stick with good ole H2O
Personally I wouldn't use just water unless you're all one metal, but if you have any aluminum with your copper I'd use at lease a little. I went overboard, but next time I'm still gonna use like 10%.
Having had a bong I can tell you that the germs can be FUNKY. It was when I saw a bunch of mosquito larvae swimming in my res that I had to switch to a closed loop w/ heavily poisoned water :)

Water Wetter will inhibit corrosion of disimular metals and won't increase your temps any to speak of. Works great for me:)

I agree, why even use antifreeze when you can use water wetter?

this could mean he was talking about beside anti-freeze as well (water wetter & other types of water treatment anyone?).
otherwise he would've just said "Anti-freeze".

I believe water wetter won't work on the critters in there, though.

If so, then that is a good reason to use the stuff I guess. I've never had that problem so I never considered using AF.
Many people already have antifreeze in their garage and whatnot. It works fine and won't increase temps if you use the right amount. I believe too much waterwetter can increase temps also. Why buy waterwetter when you already have antifreeze? ;)

Water Wetter also stains some tubing.
Antifreeze keeps my coolant green to match the inside of my case ;) I use just enough to keep the color.

mine used to be red Koolaid, using anti-freeze. That was a long time ago though. It's blue now, 40 gallons of blue liquid, but no anti-freeze. Distilled water : Methanol at the ratio of 65:35.

if yuo are ONLY running it for anti corrosion you can run it as low as 3%
