When I did it, I used a #6 artistic pencil, because it was very soft, so it had more lead than graphite in it. It worked for about 4 or 5 days before crapping out. I would suggest going to RadioShack to get a conductive ink pen, or somewhere like Canadian Tire (or the equilivent, if you live in the states) to pick up a Windshield Defogger Repair Kit, and use that, because both are WAY more conductive than pencil lead.
If you do use a pencil to unlock your chip. When you remove the lead besure to use alcohol to remove the acces lead so you don't short out the chip.
the two times i've done it i've used an hb. i've been running for about 8 months now without any problems!!!

the reason i asked was i have tried twice before with no success using 2h then 4h now i have a 5h my hand is not all that steady even after a beer or two so im a little nervous when it comes to permenatly unlocking it with the defogger kit so one last try with the h5 if it doesnt work ill reconsider the defogger kit im very avxious because locked i can get it up to 1098 i want to see what it does unlocked

I just used a mechanical pencil with standard lead. I had to go over it alot, like a couple dozen times, to get it to work, but its worked ever sence.
If you like to thoroughly clean the top of the CPU whenever you remove and reinstall the HSF, along with a fresh coat of thermal grease, I recommend a more indelible process than a pencil. One less thing to blame when you can't hit that final OC step.

you can clean off the defogger stuff, i forgot what they use, but alchohol should do, or even acetone(nail polish remover).

If you're still leery about using the defogger kit, you can use a conductive ink pen from RadioShack. That is less permanent.

Exactly what I used, since we had loads of them lying around the house. It's been working fine since I did it at Christmas :)
I think the softer pencils are supposed to be better as they contain more graphite, and conduct better. Of course it's harder to get a nice sharp line with them. I reckon the hb is a nice compromise :-)

I removed all of the lines from my last pencil job, the one that didn't work, w/ some rubbing alcohol, and redid them w/ a mechanical pencil that I had laying around. I can go 12*100 now, but its not very stable. Probably needs more voltage.

i used a mechanical pencil 0.3mm with steadler 0.3HB lead. We dont have much resources here.. no conductive pens.. but i found a defogger kit here but it wont work =( itz even in japanese! have already penciled 2 processors.. working for 3 weeks now still no problems!

I did it with an HB too but it lasted a month :(, I'm getting a conductive ink pen soon but my shop sold it near 15$ (for a pencil, it's pricey) :(

I re-did my lines w/ a .5mm Mechanical pencil, added some AS II and a nice hsf (GW FOP 38) and BOOM! I can hit 1200 @ 1.50 Vcore STABLE!

Now that's odd, I thought I posted here already. Maybe it was some other topic then.
I used a 2H pencil, but it wasn't a good solution.
I suggest using a conductive silver paint, spreaded with a toothpick. Works like a charm!
Hey geeks, there is no lead in pencils, and has not been for many many years... it is graphite and clay, china clay.... and the softer the pencil the more graphite yes.
