Greetings everyone..

I'm building a computer using some old parts that include a K62-350. I was wondering if anyone's overclocked this chip before. How high can I push it?

Thanks,
RoninX74

Those K6-2's didnt like being pushed too much. Probably only get an extra 50 to 100 mhz out of it.

That will mostly depend on your motherboard / cooling situation. I've heard that the k6-2's are not the best for big results although I've had very good results with K6III's.

Using a good board such as the FIC VA503+, I've gotten the K6III 350's to 450MHz with no problems at all and K6III+ 450's to 600MHz also with no problems.

Don't be disapointed if you "only" get it to 450MHz, that's still almost a 30% increase. Not too shabby by anybody's standards.

Good luck!

Greetings...

Thanks for the info. I'm using the FIC VA503+. Did you have you change the mutliplier, bus speed, or cpu voltage to get it up to 450? And I'm air cooling w/ my old FOP32.

Thanks in advance,

Like everyone said, don't expect much though. 50MHz probably for sure, after that???

I don't remember what the FSB for the K6-2 350 is, I imagine it's 100MHz. The K6III's I mentioned were 100MHz., so I just used the multipliers and reasonable voltage increases. The 503+ has settings for 100MHz as well as 112 & 124MHz, although I had no luck above 100MHz.
. You didn't mention if you have one of the "+" series of chips, these were released for the laptop market. Although FIC never "officially" supported these chips for the desktop PC's they did release a BETA version of a BIOS update. If that is what you do have, then you must update your BIOS to "JE4330" for support of these chips. I did a little bit of poking around on their site and found it here;

http://www.fic.com.tw/techsupport/faq/faqs01va-503+.htm

. FIC seems to change their site often, so if you need to find it later it may take a bit of looking around to find it.
. Keep in mind, the "+" series core voltage is only 2.0V. I've jumped it up to as much as 2.4V if I remember correctly, I believe others went higher.
. There is also a problem with WIN ME on that board and they've released a BIOS update to address that issue, I don't know where that would leave you with support for the "+" series of chips though.
. I've seen in several places, the availability of K6III+450's (good for 600MHz on the 503+, with performance on par with the early Pentium III's of equal clock speeds), leaving you a bit more headroom for future upgrading, But unfortunetly, I believe that this platform has reached the end of the line.

Thanks alot for the help Frank.... I've upgraded the BIOS to the latest one out. And nope, I'm not using one of the "+" chips. I still have a problem though. I set all the jumpers to increase multiplier and voltage, but I'm still not getting a speed increase. I have it at an FSB of 100MHz w/ a 4x mutliplier and 2.3 V core. When I post, the BIOS still gives me a reading of 350, so does MBM. I was wondering if there was some switch on the mobo or an option in the BIOS that I have to turn on to manually change the jumper settings.

Thanks,
RoninX74

Oh, and just another quick question, how do you guys monitor temp if there isn't a termistor on the motherboard????
Thanks,

on my FIC Va503+ ive gotten my K6 2 500 to 556. not much but it cant handle 124mhz fsb. instead of changing you multiplyer try setting fsb to 112. that would give you 392 which is not bad. if you need to know the jumper settings email me at jzeisel@orofino-id.com

Run SisSoftSandra or another test program on that, I think you'll find that you are actually running at 600MHz. On the faster K6 chips, over 400MHz I think, AMD changed the processor to recognize the 2X multiplier as 6X.

I've built several of them and they all reported like that. If you don't have SisSoftSandra you may want to check out this test page;

I got my 450 to 501on my kids puter... The ONLY good thing out of an eMachine is that it let me change the FSB and the clock.... AMD RULES

Thanks everyone... I changed the multiplier to 4x and the chip's running 400MHz. Windows is pretty stable...I just watched "Scary Movie" on the comp and a few episodes of Kenshin... That's sounds pretty stable right? Well, I really, really want to go higher, but I don't have any way to get a temp reading on the chip... I dunno what do you guys think? Should I try for something higher anyway??? I have a GlobalWin FOP-32 on it w/ some MPU 3.7 thermal goop. 22cfm fan. Opinions??
