I am building my first system and want some opinions. Here's what I want so far:
CPU Duron 750
MOBO Asus A7V133A
RAM Crucial 256mb PC133 CL2
Hard drive IBM or WD
Videocard Radeon 32mb or 64mb
Case Antec SX1030 w/ 300w PS
HSF Globalwin FOP 38
CD Writer Plextor 10x12x32x

This is what I plan on starting with. Mostly surf the net play games and do school work. Plan on OC'ing it. Sound good for a inexpensive first system? Opinions please.

Thanks, Cyric

That's a very good set of choices. When you get it all together, make sure the FOP-38 does not have a Thermal Interface Pad on it. If it does, remove the pad and use a quality heat sink grease. If you really feel inspired, lap the heatsink base also. The FOP bases tend to be rough. There are plenty of how-to articles on lapping. A simple, yet effective way to shave a few degrees of the cpu temp. Lastly, if your case has cutouts for additional cooling fans, do consider populating them. A cool case is the basis for a stabile running system. Good Luck and let us now when you have it up and running.

Sounds pretty good, actually. I'd go w/ something like a 20 gig WD HD, but I'm also partial to Fujitsu. Make sure its 7200 rpm. W/ video card, I'd suggest the 64mb DDR Radeon. I love this card. It can digest whatever I throw at it, in every resolution! Also, w/ that board, you want to run your CD-RW drive on the ATA100 chain. That will make sure that you don't get those pesky buffer underrun errors (although w/ that burner, I'm sure your chances of that will be slim to none ^_^). Good luck!

Cyric,

I just built my first system last week and our systems are similar. But I'm using the IWIll kk266; seems awsome so far and less expensive than others.

I went with the Radeon 32DDR LE version. I overclocked it and enabled Hyper-z and got 3197 on 3dmark2001.Not too shabby for the 77.00 I paid for it.

That money I saved from those parts, I took and invested in my thunderbird and heatsink.

Good luck and keep reading the forums as they helped me learn so much. Don't hesitate to ask me any questions either, I'll try to help if I can.

For the hard drive, I'd go with one of the ever-popular IBm 75GXP series. I have an IBM 40GP (20gig), and at 5400 it's sooo slow. I wish I'd paid the little bit extra for a 7200rpm one. As Oni said, get a fast drive - you won't regret it.

As for the videocard, whatever you get try and make sure it's a DDR version. In my experience there's quite a performance difference between the two, and you don't normally pay too much more for the DDR version (seems to be about 20 quid difference here in the UK for a 32MB Radeon).

Everything sounds great, should be a nice performer :-)
