installing new cpu heatsink

Well I just receieved my new heatsink and I am just curious how I need to go about getting the old thermal(i think thats what its called) off? I just read somewhere that when you replace a heatsink you need to remove the old thermal

You alchohol the rub it off. IF rubbing it dosnt work, get something small and sharp and very carefully scrape it off.

how much do you guys usually see on the cpu?

not alot of it, just a black square where the heatsink made contact with the CPU
about the black color to it, i was using the stock thermal pad, and then a cheap thermal grease

The size should be about 1/4"-1/2" square. I find the best way to remove the thermal pad, paste, thingy, is to use lighter fluid. Then follow up by cleaning the surface with 99% alcohol.

Goof off also works wonders for removing gunk on the hs. Then as stated clean with 99% al-k-hol.
