I have a Seagate 30gb 5400rpm drive that for some reason doesn't seem to work correctly. Sometimes the IDE cable just needs to be reseated, but it doesn't help. When i boot it hangs at the "detecting IDE drives" screen and then comes back after a few minutes only to report my 2 optical drives and my WD800JB. After i take out the Seagate, i get no hangs. WHen i shook the Seagate drive, i hear a part rattling around inside. Is it safe to say this drive is dead?

Are the jumpers set correctly? If it's an 80 conductor cable, you'll have to connect it with colour correspondance as well. Black for master, Grey for slave, Blue for Mobo.

I have never used the "Cable Select" option....
I always jumper the drive for either SLave or Master and be done with it....

If somthing is rattling I would guess it died, does it sound ok when powered up?
