Got the mobile chip on eBay (thought I was getting the 'normal' k6-2 - I guess the guy didn't think he could sell it if he specified!). Anyway, did the BIOS flash and am running at 550MHz (5.5x100). I tried the 2x setting to go to 6x but I got the quick beeps and a two-tone (sounds like an old DOS game when you lose). The video signal is absent (amber monitor LED), but the system SOUNDS like it is booting , you know, that clicking you hear during mem check.

Any ideas?? Thanks!!

System info:
AMD k6-2+ 500MHz @550 (5.5x100 @ 2.0V)
FIC VA-503+ v1.2 w/JE4330 BIOS
128Mb SDRAM
Diamond Stealth III S540 32Mb AGP
TB Montego II PCI sound
Some 56K v.90 modem
AT w/250W PS
Win 95 OSR 2.?

Increase the core setting to 2.1V or 2.2V and see if that helps. That two-tone beep, sometimes called the siren sound, usually indicates a CPU problem. It's unlikely your K6-2+ will run at 600 MHz at the default 2.0V setting.

i couldn't get my 500 over 550 no matter what i did or how high my vcore was! some people have had theirs higher, but i really can't see how they did it. i had a good board with plenty of options, and it just wasn't happening!

Tried 2.1 & 2.2V...no go! The monitor LED stayed green but no beeps or sounds from m/b. Seemed like it kept trying to reboot, kept hitting the floppy. Oh, well. I'm not a die-hard OC, just wanted to see what it could do. Maybe I'll try 112 FSB with 5x next.

Thanks for the help guys!

I would recommend against upping FSB on socket 7 boards very much. I ran my K6-2 on 112x5 and my IDE devices hated it (HDD, DVD and CDRW). I would try going 95 FSB x 6 multiplier (570 MHz). What kind of cooling are you going with? If you've got a decent cooler, you shouldn't be afraid to go as high as 2.8 volts vcore. I had a cooler that came with the Coppermines and I ran up to 2.8 volts vcore at acceptable (read:stable) temps. With some gutsy voltage increases you should be able to get 600 MHz.

If you are going to use a K6+ series cpu on a 503+ motherboard, then you must upgrade the BIOS no "JE4330". As you now the "+" series of cpu's were destined for the mobile market and although FIC never "officially" supported these chips, they did release a BETA version of a BIOS upgrade with the necessary support. You can get it here (JE4330);

http://www.fic.com.tw/techsupport/faq/faqs01va-503+.htm

I haven't used the 500MHz version of these, but I've had very good results with the K6III 450's. Getting 600MHz with no problem.

Good luck!
