View Full Version : 'Does this look infected?' or 'Oni got something pierced'
Got my tongue pierced yesterday. I've wanted to do it for quite a while, actually. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would (until the next day, that is), but I've run into a problem, I think, and I would like some advice.
I've been rinsing w/ Listerine every hour or so since it was put in, but a bit of a problem (I think) is occouring. the topside looks fine, but the underside looks not as good. It forms a little bit of pus at the edges, no matter how much I swish w/ Listerine, or how long I swish.
It doesn't hurt anymore than normal (I think the pain is actually subsiding), but I don't know if the pus is normal. Can somone aleviate my fears? Should I head on over to the E.R. or my family doctor?
And please, no 'OMG why did yuo doo taht?!!111' type comments. It's my body and my money, so no comments like that, please.

I was told by the lady who did the piercing that I should do that. Same by a friend who's had it done before (unfortunately, she's not picking up her cell :()

Thanks for the links, d00d.
The problem isn't really prominent. By that I mean that the pus isn't being secreted in huge gobs. Just a little bit.
The pain has gone down, and the swelling has, too. But I'm still not very intelegable when I'm speaking. ;)

That's too much for me. If the tongue stud ever gets tiresome or (God forbid) infected, I can pull it.
As it stands, it doesn't really look too bad anymore. It might actually be the kind of Listerine I'm using. The blue kind has sugar in it, aparantly. That's the kind I got.
So I'll have to use the yellow kind, I guess . Better than having my tongue fall off, however.
But Oni, the yellow kind smells like crap. Half the fun of using so much listerine is the fact that it smells good...geez. :p ;)

I've used so much Listerine in the last 24 hours that I can't really taste anything. A little of the yellow stuff won't kill me.

a friend of mine had her tongue pierced a few months ago (i think i even posted a thread here about it), when she first got it done she could talk very well..... and that's putting it lightly. by the time she learned to talk again she was getting tired of the stud (or whatever the name for it is) and pulled it out, the hole healed in like 2 days

Yep. The tongue is the body's fastest healing organ, and one of only two organs that will regenerate itself (the liver being the other one). They told me to leave it in until completely healed (in about 4 weeks or so), or the hole will close in about 20 minutes.
I'm going to go buy some different Listerine tomorrow, and see if I can get my little problem under control (if it is being caused by the sugar in the stuff I have now).

Looks alright today. I diluted my Listerine (I read that you should do that) and swished that around. It doesn't look any more red, or anything. Feels a bit better, too (my whole tongue in general, the site is still a little tender).

Looks better today. My tongue isn't completely swollen anymore, just the site. There is also less discharge around the site, too.
I went to dinner last night, too. Ate a salad, had a beer, and some ice cream. Had a Blizzard from DQ earlier in the day, too. Ice cream is the best thing EVAR when you've had this done! :D

You should be using a mouth rinse that does NOT have alcohol. The one my brother, his fianceé, and most of my friend's who have their tounges peirced, have been recommended is the Oral-B, anti-bacterial, alcohol free. basically carry a bottle of the stuff around with you , and rinse after you eat, every few hours, etc...
READ THIS. (http://www.blacksunstudio.com/tongue.html)
I'll omit the pics of pericings gone bad due to lack of proper care.

I knew most of the info there, save for the correct way the stud is supposed to look, w/ the threading on the ball end. I didn't know there was a difference, really.
Maybe in about 4 weeks or so, I'll ask to see those pics ;)
In the next couple of days, I'm going to get the stud replaced w/ a shorter one. I find the one that they put in a tad too large for my mouth. They said they'd trade the old one in, too for a shorter one, which is good.

I think i remember a guy on jerry springer who had had it done, he had also had his teeth shaprened to a point to make him self look like a lizard, probably the most bizzare shows i had seen.
On a side note i heard a while ago that things inside your mouth heal really well and quick because of the saliva or something, kind of amazing really. :)

You should always rinse tongue rings with salted water, not listerine. THat was your problem to begin with. Switch to warm salted water and do it three times a day to disinfect. Listerine is too harsh for your mouth right now. Hope you get better.

Nerdlogic: Yeah, I've been doing that, too. I stopped using straight Listerine about 2 or 3 days after I got the initial piercing; I started diluting it about 25% water 75% Listerine. That worked well. The saline helps healing.
It's starting to heal very nicely now, actually. It doesn't hurt at all anymore, and I've been playing w/ it more frequently . . . I just wish I had somebody to play w/ ;)

I think you should put your desire to want someone to play with on your sig and see how many responses you get :D
The reason why I said no Listerine is because I know a very good piercer that never recommends Listerine because it's unnecessarily strong. Good bacteria dying... all that stuff. But I am glad it's getting better. I wanted to see a picture of the pus! I was planning on getting my lip pierced since I don't think another would suit me. I have a big lower lip so I think it would look alright. Just that it would look funny with my business suit like attire at work. :) Hell, I am the only one that isn't decrepit at work! Now that I got WAY off the subject, this post shall end... so when do we see a picture? :)

I have had my tongue pierced on two different occasions . Sounds gross but if you ever get that puss on the bottom of you tongue like a little flap just pull it off. :D seriously.
I had to take my tongue rings out two years ago and can still feel the scar tissue in the middle of my tongue.
As far as pain goes, piercing your ear hurts alot worse than your tongue - stretching not that bad but when I went from a 4 to a 2 gauge that hurt like a motha.
Ohh yea getting your labret (if that’s how you spell it) that hurts the most.
I have removed all my piercing since joining the cubicle life.

Dude, tongue in nothing compared to labret. the worst part is when they grab your tongue with the tongs and they wipe you tongue. That made my gag! You can do it. just close your eyes. and make sure you suck on some ice the next week or your tongue will swell up to the top of your mouth.
That much is true.
And you're right about the pus, too. Just wipe it off! ;)

HOLY SSSHHHHHEAAA!!!!WOW!
As for the listerine swishing, i was always skepticle as to how long and frequently to do it, becuase we all know listerine has alchohol in it, and the fastest way to get soemthing into your blood stream without injecting something right in or through an open wound is under your tonque.
Heh lol i was always afraid to swish with listerine more than 20 secs becuase if i whent to school and got one of those randomized alchohol/drug tests id be in deep crap!
It made it back to the top, I see, so time for a small update.
Up until about a week ago, there was a . . . . plug, of scar tissue coming out of the hole. Presumably 'cause I played w/ it too much, and tore it. It's gone now, however. It's been healing very nicely.
The stud is still too large, however. I was looking at new ones that are smaller, and a 12-guage stud goes for about $30 CAD, which I just can't afford right now. Eventually :)
I'll get some new pics soon.

No, it didn't crack them..IT BROKE THEM OUT! FROM THE GUMLINE UP!
