Compressing old files will slow down access to those files, but will give you more space free on the disk. It won't affect the overall speed of the computer.

Just don;t compress the whole drive... U will kill yourself if you do... it makes a peppy system drag like a 486 ;) I learned from my mistake :)

You sure about that? Back when I had a 486, I compressed the drive with DoubleSpace to get an extra 100MB, and I didn't notice any performance hit.

Ive had problems in the past with doing so, with files not being able to be read or files being corrupted when accessed. But i found that the majority of "old files" were junk/obsolete so if you are using a utility such as System Mechanic or any other system cleaner tool you should be able to save some disk space by removing some of the old files (((do make backups, however)))
