I second the Oni's "WTF".
Are you talking about pirated copies of XP?

I think parts of this is cut off. From what i understand, bknight is saying that maybe it was bill who released the virus, to make it more difficult for people who use pirated versions of windows. Since boot leg versions of xp cannot download patches and such from microsoft's site. ??

I think boot leg versions can download patches but not service packs

There are ways to get both with bootlegged copies. If you are going to go bootleg it most likely is not a problem for you get updates & patches.

I recently used a PC that (I later found out) had a pirated version of XP. The patch for the blaster virus worked fine, but didn't matter because I set the machine to format itself on the next boot.
Damn pirates.

Then the point of putting the patch on the front page of http://www.microsoft.com/ is.... what? Anyone can go and download and install the patch.
And although microsoft does have some questionable motives, I highly doubt they would release a virus that would shred half of the computers in the world, bringing down essential services, and DDOSing windowsupdate. Something tells me they have plans more evil than that.

Exaclty... like relasing Paladium which is supposed to "help" us with file and application management.
The following is only because I'm in security and need to know the enemy:
If you loaded a dl'ed copy of XP pro and pulled a serial from one of the jillion places online that have such .txt files, you are not going to be able to install SP1 AND you could experience some technical difficulties with other windows update, media player, and IE.
Bill wouldn't release a virus, M$ gets too much bad press on their security as it is. His master plan is "server-side applications" so that we will not own our software thus leasing it from him. No ownership means no piracy since there will not be setup.exe files to be copied.

SP1 can be installed on pirated XPs. There was a how-to on tweaktown.com I believe.
