id prob go tbird to
Go for the TBird. Its probably faster because of its extra cache despite its 50 Mhz less clock speed. The TBird might overclock better too. Durons seem to top out under 1100 Mhz mostly.

that way my exact dilemma also goin from a classic slot 600, to a tbird 850, or Duron 900-im gonna go the tbird=extra cash and they actually run cooler than a Duron at the same Mhz
I agree with Len.
I will definitely go to T-bird unless someone point a gun to my head. The extra cache will make the big difference since you can cover the 50HZ by overclocking.

would tbird make it to 1 gig?

Impossible to say for certain but its only a 150 Mhz overclock so I'd say its likely you could hit 1Ghz.
I don't know what your budget is but I'm upgrading in mid-May and am thinking about finding one of those AXIA 1Ghz TBirds. Great overclocking potential to 1400+ Mhz. I was originally going to get a Duron but the 1Ghz are relatively cheap already at around $150 and should be even lower in a month when I buy.
Almost without exception, 1G/266 Tbirds with datecodes of this year are AXIA. I've had mine a scant 3 weeks and already, the price is down 15%from when I bought it. Though it's still $50-$60 more than the 850/200 Tbird, that money is well spent, with an eye on the future. Mine overclocks 50%. The 850/200 will probably not overclock more than about 20-30% without extreme effort. My advice is to get the cheapest Tbird that carries the 266 FSB rating or else get the cheapest Duron you can find. The 600 Duron overclocks 70-90%. Now that's good bang-for-buck!
