Welll my friend just installed his new motherboard and the mouse and keyboard do not want to work in windows xp. The keyboard works in the bios but when windows starts up it doesnt. The Motherboard name is Biostar m7viw. Whats the problem?

You need to provide more info. Are the keyboard and mouse PS2 or USB? If they are USB you may have trouble getting the OS loaded. If they are USB, pick up a cheap PS2 keyboard and mouse (you can get both for $15 to $20). Try them until the OS is loaded. Then switch back to the USB stuff.

Also, did your friend just replace the mobo and not do anything with the OS on the hard drive? If so, that is the problem. When changing mobo's it is always easiest to reload the OS from scratch. Boot from the OS CD and do a new install.

My guess is that your friend put in the new MB and used the old install of the OS. That's probably good news depending on how you look at it because it means that nothing is broke.

Can you start it in safe mode? If so, you may be able to remove motherboard resources in the device manager. If you can do that, then all you have to do is to reboot. It will discover the current MB and try to install. That may fix it all.

I tend to lean towards JimmyG. My son just bought a new Asus A7N8X-Deluxe. (Like yesterday) This was an upgrade from an ECS board. We just nuked the HDD and started from scratch. He's been playing hard core games all night without one single crash. (Of course being an 'old man' I went to bed but he told me it worked fine.) :)

Update: I took my son's old MB and put it into a machine with Win98. I cheated death  by not uninstalling a single thing.

Long story short, the machine seemed stable but would not shut down or restart. I had to install the drivers for the new MB. All seemed well but still had shutdown problems. So, I went into the control pannel, removed everything to do with the MB and restarted the machine.

After the MB driver installs, the machine works fine. Your millage may very. Of course, I know that you're working with XP but I think that it could all work out.

One note, While you have the machine up and running, put the i386 folder from the CD onto the HDD. When ever it asks for the CD, just point it to the i386 folder instead.

This asumes that you have found a way to get the keyboard or mouse working. I'm guessing that if it works in the BIOS, that you will be able to hit the F5 key while booting and get into safe mode. I'm sure you will be able to work from there. Good luck.

JimmyG: I hear ya. :D
