hey guys... i guess you could say i'm a little bit of a noobie when it comes to buildling comps... I've only built two comptuer systems in my entire life... (one for my sis, and then one for me)... both were amd based systems... I am now looking to build a computer for college... (NOTE coming this september i will be a senior in highschool... so i have a year to wait.. and not just 2 weeks ;) ) And i thought i might as well start to relearn all i forgot ;) I saw that intel came out with these new p4's with 800mhz fsb... my question is what kind of memory can you run with it? I have a extra stick of kingston hyperx 512 mb pc2700... and i was wondering could i use this stick of memory with the p4? If so, then how would you do it.... I plan on buying another stick of 512mb pc3200 so i could run the system in dual channel... Would it be better to just use the stick of 512mb pc3200 that i am going to buy... or use the old pc2700 and pc 3200....

Also when using pc2700 will i still have room for overclocking???

i think i have somewhat of an idea of how to use it but i'm not sure... my guess is don't pentium 4 motherboards come with memory ratios that you can use?

you can run any dddr with that chip/motherboard,
however, the faster memory willof course allow
the chip room to breathe, it runs at 200mhz, quad pumped, because its a p4. (they all qdr = quad data rate).
however, you CANNOT get dual channel with your pc2700
and your 3200, because dual channel requires two sticks of at least the SAME size, and SPEED. thats why it wont run dual channel, but it WILL work like that. just w/o dually.
and its and age old question.. your slower memory will fo course
hold back the faster, you can probbaly o/c it fine, but youll just have to have "relaxed" memory timings and probably up the memory voltage a little to a lot too. to give you an idea, most sticks ive seen come stock @ 2.5-2.9 volts for the ddr. ive personally run up to 3.05 on a bh7 with no issues at all.
IF you plan on keeping the old stick for awhile, try to get a motherboard that has high voltage options for the memory.
Its a good thing to look for anyways, it helps overclocks immensely. If your still curious which sticks better for ultimate speed, just pop each one in and shoot for the moon.
id suggest trying 2.5 4,4, 8 for your timings, and anywhere from 2.75 - 3.0 for voltage to get ya going.
any other questions just ask :) or better yet use the SEARCH function :)

cheers! :)

i thought dual channel ddr worked with two of teh same sticks.. OR one faster stick and one slower stick... but in the faster and slower stick combination it would go the speed of the slower memory... at least that's what i thought... can anyone confirm this???

i think you have ram confused with raid :p

In singel channel mode you can mix ram speed and size and it will run with the speed and timings of the slower ram.
But in dual channel mode you have to use identical sticks.
