View Full Version : Top Mounting My Rad---Suggestions on securing it?

I decided that in this setup I am going to move away from the front bottom mounted rad in favor of a top-mounted rad.

This is because the front bezel greatly restricts the fresh air getting to the rad as it has no holes except two tiny slits on the bottom of the bezel. I really didn't want to hack a 120mm hole in it either, it looks nice as a flat piece.

So I broke out my dremel and cut a 120mm blowhole to mount the rad to. I will have pictures of what I mean soon, but my question to you is:

What can I use to mount this rad to the top panel? I have heard of people using all kinds of sealants and such....

I mean, I could just screw it in, but I feel like there is a prettier way...

are you putting it with the fan sucking air through it out of the case?

If so, just screw your fan to the top of the case, then screw your rad to the fan.

That is kinda the plan, I just forsee it getting messy somehow...

I secure my rad/shroud/fan with two long skinny bolts with wingnuts...and unless I can find nuts that fit the bolts that are small enough to manipulate inside the tiny corner edges of the fan, I am going to have to leave some ugly-ass bolts sticking out of the case top...even if they are short.

What fan do you have? You could alwaysscrew you fan into the case with fan screws, then only run the threaded bolt through the rad-->shroud-->then only the first set of fan holes, not all the way through the fan. Then you wouldn't even bee able to tell the was anything but a fan on top of the case.

but how would I secure it from the side of the fan---the first set of fanholes?

Its an insanely tiny place to be screwing in tiny nuts.....

What I did was to secure my core with 2 fans and shrouds with 6/32 rod straight through the core in between the fins long enough to add nuts on the inside and wingnuts on the outside, my core is mounted in the rear above my power supply, this works great and it's very secure.

Yeah...

that was what I was thinking of doing but then I thought wingnuts would look ****ty sticking out of the top and began to comtemplate other options.

Oh damn that's actually a good idea!

I could just spray them black to match! Thanks man :)

Ferrels they are called? I just don't want to sound like a jackass when I ask home depot for them..

Just go to the pick a nut section and browse around, you may even find something else.
