View Full Version : I did a bad thing . . .

I hurt my poor Thunderbird. I chipped the corner when I was putting the hsf (GW FOP 38 ) back on after re-applying the AS II. I chipped it but good. It dosn't run at stock speed any more (1000 Mhz). I had to throttle back the multiplier to 8 (8*100) so now it only runs at 800 Mhz. I emailed the store I bought it at (PCCanada (http://www.pccanada.com)) to see if they can RMA it. AMD chips have a 3 year warranty, right? I'm not sure. Its not boxed. When I bought it, it was on a foam pad in an acetate bag. That means its not OEM right? I'm never sure about that kind of thing. Do you think that there's a hope that I'll be able to get my computer back up and running?

That sounds like an OEM. I believe retail comes with heatsink/fan. Anyway, if you are still in the period for your warranty, it shouldn't matter whether it is OEM or retail. You are just lucky it still works at all. Mine doesn't. I would ask you to report this to Ed on the front page, as he is trying to compile a database about how these chips perform and/or crap out.

I'm sorry to hear about your cpu oni :(. That's why copper shims are a good thing boys :). After hearing all the bad stories, I'm not ever installing a cpu without a copper shim.

Cheers.

I'm gunna try to get it warranteed tomorrow, and I'll DEFINATELY think about picking up a copper shim. Thx for the advice!

Sorry about that,
if you unlock the cpu permanantly you maybe out of luck, however if unlocked with pencil or whatever make sure to erase it good. as soon as they hear the word overclocking the warrantee is voided.

Well, I only did the bridges w/ a pencil, so that'll come off w/ a healthy dose of alcohol. Hopefully I'll get an email back today about it.

There is a new, non conductive shim out now. The copper shims were almost as bad about killing cpu's as chipping the cores with the big heatsinks.

Hey, just for giggles, I went into the BIOS, and set my multiplier back to 12. Lo and behold, it booted into Windows2000. I ran Folding@Home. Stable. I ran 3DMark2000. Stable. Played Quake 3 Team Arena. Stable. I'm shocked here, folks. My chipped processor is still performing at the same level it was before it was chipped! Joy!!

this solves the probs with shims, i can now recommend shims! Great links, i did not know these were out yet.

I broke a Duron core when I didn't have my Alpha setting correctly on it, it never did run again. I have a spacer under my TBird now. For a while there I was changing heatsinks/fans on an ongoing basis, all it took was one careless moment.

If you get a spacer check out the ones that BOVON refered to, the non-conductive type, I have a copper one but the non-conductive have been getting some good reviews.

Copper spacers keep alot of heat in. I dont like them if you are OC'ing. Instead check out the new Swiftech Heatsinks. They go on real easily and virtually no chance of crushing a corner.

yeah, or go water cooling, they aren't too bad on the core. sorry to here about that, if you get a shim, be absolutely sure to get the nonconductive ones. I want to know what they make them out of. Hopefully something like Titanium or something really fancy.
