The cores are pretty fragile. But as long as you're careful, and smart about heatsink installation(read: dont use an orb), you shouldn't have much to worry about at all. And if you Crack one, all is not lost. I've got an old duron 600 that is chipped badly, and I can still run it at just over 700.

I'd still get a copper shim to protect. Someone just posted that they cracked it with a FOP-32? Resellers are startign to get smart now....lots of places won't RMA cracked CPU's even if under warrantee, as they consider it USER ERROR, not a faulty product.
It all depends on the cooler and how often you take it off. Some coolers have CRAP clips on them and will chip the core. The one I have used whch IMHO has the best clip, is the SOCKET AH0 from 3dfxcool. But then it's cooling is not exaclty spectacular. Pity. Although it does have a nice colour :D
I cracked my T-bird w/ an FOP-38. Hopefully I'll get it RMA'd. Its still under warranty, I believe.
