hey fiz, how's it going. My o/c adventure seems to have come to a crashing halt.
duron700@884 8.5x104 1.3v stable
42c idle 46c underload
Lapped my stock h/s to a mirror like finish with stock cpu fan(coolmaster) 5000rpm
Can't seem to get it any higher. Tried 9x100, boots half way through windows then freezes. Tried to up the voltage to 1.45 but wont boot at all(screen stays black)
I have a 300w psu. Any thoughts as to why it would not boot when i up the voltage???

Hey milk, how are ya? :) I'm glad to see that you got such a good OC, 184MHZ, nice!! As far as the volts go, sometimes you have to push it as high as 1.85 on a duron, but this generates alot of heat to deal with. I would keep upping it by .025 incriments and see what happens. Worst case scenario: you may be near the limit of what the proc can do. One side note, lose the coolermaster, the are good for stock speeds, but when they are under stress they can run warm. But that's not to say that your temps are bad, actually they are better than mine!!!LOL Also try changing the VIO alittle and see if that helps. I will give this some more thought today and post back if I come up with anything. And again, congrats on the good OC!!!

I was suppose to get a fop 38 and some A.S 2 over the weekend but my cousin never brought it down from T.O. So i'm gonna have to order a beter h/s to lower the temps. But if i cant improve the voltage situation there's no point changing the h/s cause my temps wont get any higher at this point.

What kind of thermal paste are you using now? I thought I had seen you post about not using any, if so, that could be what's holding you back. I had my heatsink on just a teenie bit off center(the clip was bent funny) and I couln't get any higher than 1155MHZ, I took it off, fixed the clip(again)lol and when I was done it flew right up to 1200 with no probs at all. I honestly think the prob is with the heat situation. I am also wondering if you have done a burn in yet? If not, give it a shot, it helped me out a bunch. I just dropped the speed down to 900, upped the vcore as high as it would go and let it run PRIME95 for about 8 or 9 hours. It seems to have helped out with my stabilty a bunch and also helped keep things a bit cooler. Sorry to hear about the FOP38 and the A.S. II, that really sucks. I will have my WBK in about two weeks and I am hoping to hit 1300. One last thing, OCing is a slow process, when I got my proc it wouldn't do anything over 1133 at any voltage, it's been about 2 months and I am up to 1200(lotta trial and error :) ). It might take a little bit, but you can probably make 950 or so, maybe even the 1G!!! Good luck

Considering the standard, non-overclocked core voltage for a Duron is generally considered to be 1.6-1.65V. If, by upping (as you say) the voltage to 1.45V, it becomes unstable, you definitely have a cooling problem. Stay at the speed and voltage that does not overheat it until you can get a better heatsink. Then try overclocking. The temperature of the air inside the case is a big factor also. Strive to keep it down as much as possible.

Fiz I was going without any paste for a short time,i had my cpu clean before my cousin showed up. Picked some up at radio shack and now using their brand..

I don't see how it can be a temp problem not being able to increase the voltage...my idle temp is a 42c right now. Can the temps climb that high that fast just trying to increase the voltage? Even when it wont boot?????

Which voltages have you tried, 1.6-1.65 is usually the defualt voltage for the duron. Try upping to that and seeing if it will post. If not, try alittle bit higher(we'll do some troubleshooting). I am also wondering what your voltages look like in windows on your hardware monitor, the psu may be the culprit here. Don't worry man, we'll get that beast running higher. :)

I could be mistaken but i was sure i seen my default voltage to be 1.3...I'll try it when i get home to raise it to 1.6 and see what happens...will let you know

Well i bumped my vcore to 1.7 and changed the mutliplier to 9x100 and the system booted fine, ran 3dmark2001 and made it through no problem. Now i'm running prime95... it's been running for just over an hour now and it's only at 24%.(running as we speak, type, read, whatever) it's on right now. I'm not familiar with these programs so i set it on "whatever seems to make sense"(i think thats what it said?)

Is that a good setting for a stability test or not?

My temp is now at 49c whith prime95 running...

several minutes pass and prime95 is at 75%... temp still at 49c

Well, it made it to 100% , contacted the server and kept on going with a new set of numbers. I have no idea if i should let this program run or what. Can you please explain to me what exactly is this prime95 doing and how long should i be letting it run for?

I'm gonna try running 3dmark2001 at the same time and if it makes it through o.k. i'll let prime95 run some more and check up with you later...
tks fiz.

With Prime95, I usually just select options/torture and let her rip. You temp is a little on the warm side. I have had better luck overclocking as long as I kept the CPU temp to 45C or less during stress testing.

Hoot is right, 49 is a bit warm, but it's nothing that's going to kill the comp, but it could lead to a bit of instability. I got mine up to 53-54 today and it was still rockin with no crashes(still have to wait a bit for my WBK). I am glad that you got it up and running again, and I must say that you are getting one hell of an OC out of that thing, I have read that the 700's can be a bit of a pain to OC, but you are really smokin!!! :) I usually run prime95 and 3Dmark together to test my stability, if it will run the two of them together for a half hour, I call it all good. I haven't had a crash after using that as a stability test. Prime95 is good on it's own as well, if you are unstable it will give a hardware failure error. It sounds to me as though you are stable and if you get some good cooling you could reach a GIG with relatively few probs. Congrats on the GREAT OC and let me know how it's going. Good luck!
