My friend got a disk boot failure on his old emachine, the only thing decent on this computer is the 80 GB drive. He gave me the drive and I backed up all of his good data, and now i want to fix the boot failure problem, I backed up just incase that dosnt work. Now I have heard of people doing it in the Windows Xp Repair, but what options do I need to use? A Fix MBR or? Any ideas.

My other question is that I want to fix the problem on my computer, not his setup I was thinking jsut boot to repair, do that stuff and then turn off, I wouldnt try to boot into xp with the hardware change. Would that be ok or should I do it on his setup?

Thanks in advance.

delete all temp files, scan for viruses, fix mbr, blah blah blah, if it doesnt work, try reinstalling xp over itself, dont know if xp plays nicely w/ itself like 9x did, but its worth a shot. (http://short-circuit.zapto.org)

XP actually has a repair install feature so you wont have to install the OS over the old OS.

It is fairly easy to do following the on screen directions but here is the walkthrough
