Hey, my comp freezes every time I restart and get to the logon screen of Windows XP. sometimes it makes it a bit farther into the load, then just freezes. This only started a few days ago.

the system is

ecs k7s5a
1700+ default
1 80gb maxtor
msi g4 mx440
1 x 512 sdram
generic 300W

please give any suggestion you have whatsoever, I hate using my neighbour's comp!

My son's machine over at his mother's place was showing the same symptoms. He ended up bringing it over to my place to check it out.

After about an hour of the same lockup symptoms, I opened the case and found two bulging capacitors with electrolyte stains at the tops.

Probably would not hurt to give yours a quick check just in case thats your problem.

Hey,

thanks for the suggestion

Before going crazy, I did do a brief check of the system. All molex, IDE, power, pci cards, cpu etc. If it's a hardware problem, why does it always freeze at the same point? I just don't understand.

I'll keep fiddling, if anything comes into mind, lemme know!

thanks

His did the same thing, partially into the windows loading screen it would freeze. Ran the setup disk and it got so far into the first loadinf of the disk and it would lockup again.

You could always try pulling out your cards and reseating the video card and ram and try it. Add any other cards later one at a time if it works.

Or, try resetting your cmos by shorting the jumper with the machine off and using safe bios settings to see what happens.

Also, check the heatsing to see if there is any dust built up or the fan maybe not working. Could cause an overheat which would cause a lockup.

ditto with the previous suggestions. open it up and clean out the dust. check to make sure your fans are working, especially the HSF on the cpu. good luck.
