View Full Version : Help! I think I killed my 1.3 Athlon

Well, had it running great, decided that I'd try reversing the flow of air with my Alpha PAL 6035. Rigged the fan so it was blowing instead of sucking. Gently tightened the screws on the heatsink. Turned on the comp - started to smell burining heard a spark, yanked out the power cord as quickly as I can. Now the comp won't post.

Took off the heatsink. There were two marks on the corner of the chip (not the core, the outer area) where the screws had scratched the paint off the chip. (I had forgotten that the shroud on the 6035 sits slightly high above the heatsink itself, so when the fan was reversed the screws were just slightly too long) It is not cracked, just marked and not that deep. There are no signs of burning on the cpu itself, the arctic silver was just fine.

Have I shorted out the chip? Any comments gladly received (kind ones please).

I'm hoping I haven't made a $200 key ring.

I think tha if you smelled something burning, you may very well have a keychain. Before you buy a new one though, take it to a friends house and give it a test(and if you can test his/hers proc in your mobo to rule that out.) I am really sorry that is isn't working. :(

No, the board is OK, I had another cpu and put that in and everything was fine.

I don't think it got fried, unless the screws lifted the heatsink off the core slightly - but wouldn't there be some burn marks on the core (black spots at least). I don't think this happened as the clip should have kept the sink on the core and the screw marks were not all that deep.

I'm interested in the scratches to the cpu - would that have caused this?

well if you system works with a different cpu and dosent with the burnt/scratched cpu .....looks like you`ve got your self a mighty fine key chain ;P

i wounder if we collected all the fryed chips from oc.com members and sold them for scrap.... of some kind...? ;D

I fried a 1.2 when the lug broke off the socket and it only took a few seconds to fry. There were no marks on the chip at all, the thing looks brand new but it is fried none the less. I hope yours isnt fried but there doesnt necessarily have to be black marks to be fried.

I feel your pain. I fried a 1.33. Luckily, no Physical Damage, and Its being RMA'd Through ATACOM.COM. They still havn't sent the new chip back to me yet though. And I overnighted it to them on friday, so they'd have it Monday... kind of getting worried... How long does this usually take?

Ouch! I hate it when that happens. Welcome to the keychain club. I have two out of three vehicles covered. That third one has me worried. Hope it gets a $40 Duron instead of a 1333 Bird!

I hope you are wrong about the new key chain. I really hate it for you if it is fried. I'm new to overclocking and I have been so worried about doing something like that. I just logged on to catch a few posts before bed and this was the first up. I know I will fall asleep tonight having nightmares about fried T-Birds now.

Well, I'm sending it back to AMD, lets see if they replace it. It was a retail box chip.

I can only hope!

Oh, yeah, the guy at AMD told me that it would be replaced in about a week. Do they inspect them or just throw them? I know I had a Pentium III go bad. They didn't even look at it, just sent a new chip out. I only know because 6 weeks after getting the replacement they were still trying to confirm that the chip had been received - I had to supply the Fedex # again.

Let me know how you get on with Atacom

When you say 1.3 athlon - is it o/ced to 1.3? or do u actually have a 1.3 oc/ed to soem ridiculous amount?

Hey dont worry- there are many ppl (including myself) who have completey f*cked up decent CPUs

My condolences also. If your screws bore into the CPU hard enough to mark the finish on the substrate, chances are you lifted the HS baseplate off of the CPU enough for it to fry. My heart goes out to you, as I know they are a major investment. I hope your vendor will replace it and also that he doesn't read these forums ;D

It’s a distinct smell. Though you don't know for sure when it happens, you know its something you have never smelt before. Your brain spins wildly and you grab for the power cord. Alas the smell is not a warning of what might come but instead of what has already happened.

RIP 1.33, now let us all pray to the RMA Gods, “Oh beloved ones whom we respect so much please send us another worthy CPU. Do this and we promise never to OC again.” <At least until we get a couple of good weeks use out of the chip>
:)
