View Full Version : Really un-constant CPU Temperatures

Heya guys, i put together a new system for my friend over the weekend and it's not doing so swell. For the most part, its a kt7a running a tbird 1200 @266. Well, everytime i try to run the CPU at that speed, it gets way hot, like 65+ Celsius. So i have to cruise it down to 1000 @200 just in order to get into windows. When im not doing anything in windows, it remains at about 23 C, but whenever i run some processor intense actions, like installing some software, or playing a 3d game, the temperature skyrockets fast. Within like 10 seconds, it goes from 23, 50+. Ive tried 3 different Heatsink and Fan combos, and all of the results are very similar. Anyone think that this is a defective CPU?

I'd probably take a look at the positioning of the thermistor under the CPU. bend it up so that it touches the bottom of the core and put a little thermal paste on it. Beyond that, it could be the cpu. But it doesn't sound like it. Also, make sure you don't use too much thermal grease between the cpu and hsf.

A defective cpu will never run. Everything is runing fine but the heat is too high then The cooling sytem is your problem. You need a VERY GOOD heatsink and fan. Changing 3 stock heatsink and fans won't help a bit. Get a good one that could bring down the heat :-) :-) :-)

I would take off any thermal tape the heatsink/fan may have, and flat file the bottom of the heatsink. Then coat it with a generous amount of thermal grease (not too much) and wipe any excess ANYTHING off the dye of your processor with a slightly wet paper towel. When you start up your computer, check all processor settings/voltages.

I have the same problem
CPU is 31C idle - after a few words written in MS Word it is going to 65C - it takes about 10 secs. When not writing, after 20-30 secs cpu temp is 31C again.
Cooler is really big - after all experiments with cooler and case I think I need better thermal grease.

I would rule out the defective cpu, if it were, it probably wouldn't run at all. I am wondering what type of thermal paste you are using? If you are not using any or you are using a *gulp* thermal pad, get it off of tehre as quick as you can and BURN IT!!! lol. When I got my hsf I noticed the clip wasn't that tight so I took it off and bent it alittle and it dropped alot of degrees. Does your hsf have the little pads on it? If it does get them off, when they are combined with the ones on the proc it makes the hsf sit to high and you will get little if any contact between the two. One last question, when the proc is that hot, is the heatsink hot to the touch? If not, you need to reseat it, at 65'C it should be VERY hot to the touch, if it 's luke warm you have a seating prob. Hope this helps alittle.

Fiz is right, if the HSF is properly seated(and not on backwards), it should be quite hot to the touch if your CPU is running at 65°C. Definately look into that. Have you tried the mobo with another chip? I know we don't all have spare proc's lying around(I do), but maybe take it in to your local comp store and ask them to 'loan' you acpu for a minute. I would try not talking about the overheating issue, it'll increase your chances of getting one. Maybe you could pull the chip outta your comp and try it out briefly(but with thermal paste and a HSF).

WOW 60c ?
You can get by with the stock sink if you get a Black label delta fan, that's what Im running and it keeps my temps under 38 for load.
Before the Delta my load temps where going up to around 52 or so.
Also make sure your case is getting some fresh air from the outside and is able to get rid of the hot air inside......

My new 1.33 266 runs 41*c under load with the room temp of 76*F. Monitor hte temp with the Asus Probe Program. Something is wrong with that temp. Use a razor thin coating of AS II. If the heatsink is not touching the core, it would fry your CPU.

Not sure what your using as a heatsink fan combo but I am running a kt7a with a 1200@1430 and under full load never hit 45' c. Couple of ways you can get your chip cooler.

Try one of the vantec fce-62540d heatsinks with a nice sunon 60mm fan on top. ;-) Coolerguys.com sells them for $20. Cover the core with artic silver II before you clamp it down and you should see better temps.

Also make sure your case is properly ventilated and cooled. Check out casesetc.com for cheap ways to mod your case. They sell 80 mm & 120 mm drill bit attachments that make it really easy to blow holes in your case and add fans. Make sure you file the edges down after making the holes. <g>.

G'luck with it,

Sirfin~

I went out and grabbed the largest hts/fan combo i could. The temp now stays below 50, but she sure is loud now.
