I'm gonna install a copper shim with my Athlon. What I was thinking of doing is to use a rasp or sandpaper to file the sides of the copper shim. I mean the sides that get too close to the bridges. Should I do this just in case the copper did move when installing the Heatsink and fan?. What do you guys think? Any advice about this?

Cheers.

I have read in many places that it is a bad idea to use a shim with an Athlon or Duron. I'm just telling you that it may be a bad idea.

From all the posts I've seen of people shorting there chips with copper shims I would suggest getting on of the nonconductiveones that their making now.

ya, I read that too. I guess if I use the shim properly I will be fine. I have the DTS 400 copper shim which has the holes where the little feet from the cpu go thru. I guess those holes keep the the shim in place. What I'm thinking of doing is filing the areas where the shim gets too close to the bridges. . It is a tough call if you think about it thou :(, some people say that they never had any trouble installing a shim in fact it prevented them from crashing the core or the outer sides of the cpu. I guess I'll make my decision depending on what input I get here :)

Well it actually happened to me, It killed my Tbird 800 that was able to do 1,120Mhz. My second Tbird 800 was only able to do 1000Mhz. I used a shim on that though. What I did was put a decent amount of superglue on the four edges of the cpu and place the shim on but make sure you get it right the first time. If not you can always get a razor (Thin type) and go at it between the shim and cpu (at the corners) rocking the blade back and fourth until the shim comes off and repeat the process. Make sure you scrape off all the super glue before redoing the process. This way the shim don't slide around and kill your cpu. After killing 4 other Tbirds(not shim related) I'm stuck with a Duron 700 @ 1020. Oh well.

Kenshin, I never knew that you could put superglue between the cpu and shim . Did that affect your temps at all? It sounds like a good idea though. Perhaps I will do that. What do you think of the rasp ideat though?

Cheers.
