That brings us to "Norrko", his huge and widely spread WU prediction(600-900/day) presented somewhat of a problem in trying to establish fairly balanced teams, and should anythings bad happen his team would have been sunk. A suggestion was made that I hope addresses these concerns and at the same time adds a new twist to our format and still allows Norrko to be a KEY player in this race. What I am proposing is that each Sunday evening I will take Norrko's production for the week and divide it into 5 shares. Each team will receive 1 share, and the team in fourth place that week will receive the extra share. I am posting these proposed team rosters as well as the "Designated Hitter" idea now and would appreciate constuctive feedback, with the idea of getting this started with my 8:15PM EDST data collection on Sunday August 24, 2003. I would further propose that this be a timed race to conclude with my data collection on Sunday October 12, 2003, the winner to be the team having completed the most WUs during the race period.

One note, if the team captains would like to choose a name for their team please post it here or drop me a note and I will set it up that way.

Respectfully,
SkyHook

I would not mind running this team race as proposed. If it does not produce a close race then we can try something else next time. :)

Frog in a Blender

I'll have to find that old Joe Cartoon and post it...funny stuff.

Anyone else on my team got comments?

Here's the infamous Frog in a Blender!
Make sure you don't press the buttons too fast or you'll miss some funny stuff! (http://www.joecartoon.com/pages/frogbender/)

the proposed format is fine. the only thing is, whoever, the last place 4th team is, if they are only trailing by a couple dozen WU/week or so, an extra part of Norrko's WU will make a hugh difference, the middle or leading team would never get the extra share of WU till the last section of the race if they are producing good amount of WU and never got drop to the back.... in other words, it might be a good strageige not to produce "too much" WU/week, therefore, in order to gain an extra share of Norrko's WU! may be i'm confused or not completely understand......

but, whatever you guys had chose, it's all fine to me! ;)

Here I am... So.. I belong to all teams and at the same time to none of the teams?

Am I the hidden joker in this game...

I've got another idea... the four other teams versus me... ;) Noop.. that's not a good idea...

I like you idea SkyHook.. Take my submitted WU's and split it... But it feels kinda strange that I'm on this team and still outside the small virtual teams... I know why, but is there any way to get some "credit" for my production so I can feel that I do something here... Right now it seems (in the team setup) that I'm not even signed up for the race.

OK... I'm here... again..

LandShark.... You got a point there...

Here's my proposal.

Divide my WU's with 17.
For example 800/17=47.06
Take this number times 4.... 47.059*4=188.24
Give 188.24 to each team...
Give the last 1/17'th to the last team in the race... The last team will receive 235.3 WU's...
To make the last share even smaller... Just divide my WU's with a greater number...

or......... could Norrko be a team on his own too? like we credit his WU by 1/2 or 1/3 depending on his estimated output.... that way, he sure will try to produce as close to 900+ as possible to keep up all other 4 teams, while at the end, it's a good benefit (extra WU from Norrko) for the whole OC.com Team too!!

Team 1+2 VS Team 3+4 VS Norrko?

I like the setup as proposed... if you have followed the team races in the past, there has usually been a BIG lead between the winning team and closest competitor...

Should add some excitement to the mix... especially if you are on a team that looses a major player toward the end of September...

whatever is decided... GOOD LUCK to all... and may the best team kick the rest of your... well you know..

Crunch on!!!

My only thought on your concern Gary is that the teams were all built on fairly accurate predictions of WU production and sandbagging should be quite evident and would be addressible. Further, my vision of this idea see's a fourth place team receiving a boost that at least in theory should make it difficult for them to repeat as fourth place team the following week. As Cy said it is kind of unexplored territory and at the very least will provide more knowledge to base future races on now that WU production has reached undreamed of figures due to new technology and extreme commitment by SETI'ers.

Looks good as Skyhook has suggested to me.

I think that given the period of time for the race that the 5th share of "Norrko" could and most likely will end up on all 4 teams during the race.

Yea...when? I need to dump a cache and want to wait untill just before we start. I know we can't use currently cached w/u's.

The Race will begin with my Sunday August 24, 2003 data collection which I try to do at 8:15PM EDST. The winner will be determined after my data collection on Sunday October 12, 2003

SkyHook

BTW - For all those wishing to monitor things with SETITeam I will make available the team script as well as the initial CMP file so everyone can be on the same page. Should see it posted later Sunday evening, after 9:00PM EDST.

So I should dump just before 8:00. Correct?

From first post of the thread. ;)

Meaning that we should all dump our cache at about 8PM Eastern Time on Sunday August 24th and start with zero at that point. Right?

edit: To slow typing again

That would clean you out of previously completed WUs prior to the baseline data being collected for the race, so yep.

Thank's for clarifying that for me. :)

It looks like our team would be reasonably happy with the name "Team Crunch'o'matics!"

Thanks.
