View Full Version : Gringo - Go get me some Tacos eh?
Hey My PC is dis:
AMD K6-2 500 @ 551
JetWay 531CF (SiS 530/ 5595 Chipset)
My Vcore is at 2.8 - it was the lowest thing i could change to that would allow me into windows - Is this unsafe? I am getting 34C idle and after i ran the full 3dMark 99 Max benchmark - i hit 54C (!!!!!!) At the moment im not doing anything CPU-intensive until i get some help....
Is 2.8v Vcore safe? Why is my CPU so damn sh*tty? What kind of cooling do i need to keep it at this speed *cold* - cold as in idle 30 - full load 40?
Plz help!?!?
This I can comment on :)
Your temps are not TOO out of line for a K62-500. The way the "K6" series was made makes it very hard to keep them cool. I ran a K6III 400 @ 450 on an AOpen board at 2.8V and it would run in the low 50's under load. I put an Alpha heatsink on it and was able to get into the mid to upper 40's.
Most 500's I have heard of only did 550 realistically. They were already at the upper limit for the core architecture.
Howabout lets start with... What cooling do you currently have? Is the computer stable at default speeds? Is your board capable of overclocking?
hehe Skip beat me to the post by about 2 seconds... It is weird to post when there have been none and see that someone beat you ;-) I agree with skip. Let me know what cooling you currently have and I can help you out a bit more...
my k6-2 500 only ever did 560, with the vcore at 2.5v and a really crappy hsf. that was on an epox mvp3g2, which is a magic little mobo. i tried absolutely everything to get it higher, but it just wouldn't go. i think you might have reached your limit.
Cooling? errr... Okay.. lets see its about the size of the CPU itself, 1.5CM tall - heatsink is about 1.5CM - i have 2 extra little ****ty 12V SYS fans - about to drill holes ion the case and stick them in... So it is pretty darn ****ty - i put it back to 500 for the moment - i just dont think its safe running at 58C under load :(
Argh - whats a HSF? Heatsink fan? arr prolly - the thing is im poor as anything and get little money.. And another dam thing with my lame-ass mobo i can only choose ...2.2, 2.3, 2.4, the nstraight to 2.8 - wheres the 2.5? Oh i Dont know

If you have enough money lying around to afford a cheap Duron/mobo combo, if NEED BE, then just max out that vcore and run that chip for all it's worth. It probably will be fine, but if it breaks down, you can always just go for a cheap Duron system. If you absolutely cannot afford a replacement then you SHOULD NOT be overclocking in any case, at least not unless you don't mind going computer-less for a while if the ***** hits the fan.
Anothetr post about me getting a duron - I am! Didnt i say that b4? Oh well - Ill network these 2 pcs - and have the K6-2500 serving as a file safe and emulation machine (i emulate evrything snes/amiga/n64/ the lot)
One more thing - my dad who bought the cpu and shoved a HSF on it - told me that he *didnt put any thermal paste oni t( cos he dint have any! Argh! Is this why my temps are sooooo high? Another thing that really *****es me off is that i cant set Vcore to 2.5 - And dude from the previous post - y dont u go stick your pc on maxed-out VCore.
