Subject says it all. Where's the best place to get these chips at a good price, or is it best to just risk ordering from somewhere that doesn't specifically say AXIAs? I'll probably be getting a 1 GHz 266 and a 1.3 GHz 200. Also looking for Asus A7M266 newest revision (1.04 I believe). TIA,

There are places that advertize AXIA's. I don't believe that the 1.3/200's are AXIA's though.

Almost without exception, 266 rated CPUs are AXIA. So look in pricewatch for the best price (including rip-off shipping charges) and look up the seller in the resellerratings page to make sure they are not some sleaze. Then order one. I got mine a few weeks ago from Dynasty Express. They do not rip you off on shipping. Though they are not rated highly in reseller ratings, my experience with them went very well.

You can also check out http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/weekly_cpu/. They are pretty much inline with pricewatch. I got my 1200 266 from there a couple of weeks ago from http://www.icompz.com/ had no trouble at all with them.
You can also get a 1.33 266 for what I paid for my 1200. <g>. Gotta love amd. :-)

actually, i think the 1ghz 266 cpu's would be the exception. I have an AVIA T-Bird at that speed and bus. Was a little disapointed, oh well

I have searched through many trays of 1Gig 266Mhz Cpus over the past few weeks. I have found many 'AVIA' coded T-birds amongst those that I serched. I have only found one 'AXIA' which is now in my possession that had the third row beginning with a letter..and it is 'Y'. (I have yet to test this CPU, but should see some initial results over this coming week-end)

This is only anecdotal, but it does appear that over the short period that I have been chasing 'AXIA's that there are more of those at the lower default speed, and less of the 'AVIA'.

I go to a show nearly every week-end, and if I find something startling, like the appearance of a new code....as has been reported 'A??A' I'll report it on the forums.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll check out the links. I wish there were more local stores that I could search! Later,

Unfortunately i think most of the retail boxed 1 ghz 266fsb chips ARE AXIAs, but they're more money and you cant look at them until you've bought them. My retail 1 ghz 266 from newegg.com showed up last night and it was an AXIA week 10 with a y starting the next line <supposed to be about the best code going> right now its at 1470 and with mo better cooling i think it can go a good bit faster, its sitting around 50 C loaded now

Sounds nice! Unfortunately retail chips around me are pretty expensive. Then there's the chance that it isn't an AXIA :( Is that with the stock cooling then I assume? Pretty impressive! Later,

Actually thats with a Global Win FOP38, i think i need some more thermal paste, i was just about out when i went to put it on, lol...Im considering water cooling or something to try and go faster. Newegg charged me 168 for the retail box with HSF and everything, comes with a pretty nice heat sink actually, the fan looks like a POS though, its like 1/4 the thickness of my delta 38cfm, actually its a delta fan too, but i dont think its the same as that nice slimline 25 cfm either, its awful small for such a fast cpu, i did get a nice booklet and amd sticker too, lol, they only wanted 20 less for a tray cpu and didnt have any in stock so i took the retail

We know that the codes of CPUs have been getting progressively further along in the alphabet since the Tbird's inception. Each change in lettering has been determined to most likely be a change in the way a CPU is made. AMD is continually tweaking their plants in order to get better yields on chips, which now are such good yields that they can run faster than the top end chips they are actually releasing.

When they find a better way of doing things they don't go back to an older and less effective method of making chips. That's because AMD's goal is the exact same goal that we all have, they just have a more official way of going about it. They want CPUs that can run as fast as possible and turn out the fewest amount of duds that can't make even their minimum specs.

The bottomline with this is the following: AMD is no longer producing "AGGA", "ADFA", "AEEA" or any other lower alphabet chips AT ALL. They are simply not being produced. Any chip you buy with these codes is one that has been floating around in the resale chain for a while. I kind of doubt they are still producing "AXHA", "AXIA" and "AVIA" chips.

What I suspect is they are producing exclusively "AXIA" chips, while they work on coming out with the next best thing. Any new chip you buy that has come out of AMD in the last several weeks is going to be an AXIA, not an AVIA or anything else. The 266 MHz bus chips are most likely AXIAs because they have all been introduced relatively recently, although there may still be a few AXHAs, AVIAs, etc mixed in.

If you want an almost guaranteed AXIA order from a popular store (TCWO, Newegg, etc) which has recently sold out their stock of processors. Since they have sold out their previous stock, that means any new stock they get in has to come directly from AMD. New stock is going to be AXIA.

If you go with a lesser known store, there is still a chance you will get an AXIA, if they have new stock in. But since they are lesser known they might have sold fewer CPUs and still have a few older stock CPUs (AXHA, AVIA, etc) hanging around.

Got one at Fry's Electronics in Phoenix, Arizona. An AXIA 1 GHz 200 OEM/bare. Though the main goal going there was to get some other stuff. I also ordered an IWill KK266-R mobo from newegg.com, so we'll see what I end up with the new PC.

Your best bet is to go to a computer show or a dealer who has stock, and look for whatever you want. Otherwise the only 100% safe way to get an AXIA is to order a 1.33GHz chip. All others have increasingly less likely hood of being AXIA, as the Clock speed drops.
