I recently ordered a Computer part from the states and got hit w/ "Brokerage fees". The fees were almost as much as the I bought the item for.

My question is how many of you order from the states or outside of your country and how do you deal w/ the duty at the border and/or Brokerage fees?
Now my order was from UPS..are they the only ones who charge you w/ brokerage fees or do most couriers do that w/ international orders? Will i get stuck w/ taxes w/ Ground shipping only?

UPS is horrible and notorious for its high brokerage fees...I know from experience.

I always try and get my contact in the US to ship USPS, they've been the most friendly regarding taxes/duty.

If you can get the seller to mark the item as a gift, with a value of less than $60 CAD, then you can get away without paying any tax or duty or brokerage fees. This may also restrict any insurable value of your item to the declared value, so you might want to take that into consideration.

Yes indeed, stay AWAY from UPS when ordering internationally. I almost always choose USPS and have only been hit once with duty. Out of 2 times with shipments via UPS... both times hit with brokerage fees.... never again for international shipping
