View Full Version : 86c? Still fine...
Duron 800@800 using 1.85v. I unplugged the fan to saturate the heatsink for testing, and forgot I unplugged it. Played a few minutes of Alice, got carried away. Allan Neilsen's ICQ message stopeed me, and I relised I was running at 86c!!!!!!!! Still fine....

Must be that unlucky 13 coming into play... though you didn't fry it this time I guess ;-)
I would be intrested to see exactly how high you can go with one. Anyone want to donate a duron to test on?

Spode, I'd be interested to know, have you shut your machine down yet?
Did you shut it down when it was THAT hot?
I've been throwing this around in my mind for a while now, IF a cpu gets to a mad temperature like that, is it better to try and cool it as it runs? and shut it down when its gone back to a reasonable temperature?
I now have a desk fan sitting on stand-by in case this happens again,
just a thought, maybe the fast cooling of the chip is what does the harm.
Any experience of cpu deaths I've had have been when the machine was shut down after a real roasting, they dont seem to just crash and burn.
Could be wrong, only "murdered" 3... 3 too many too :(

If it aint broke, fix it until it is!
I plugged the fan back in and watched the temps very quickly go back down to mid 30's
plenty interesting, this, meneer spode. i wonder how long you could keep it that high, though, before it damaged itself and the mobo. i'm this close to buying an axia 1ghz tbird (even though they cost over $200 here), so if i do i might experiment with this...

uhhh...if you're going to test this, do it on the cheapest Duron available... I doubt damage to your board is a major issue, I bet the CPU would die long before your board was damaged. Even so, use the cheapest board you have...
AMD says the CPUs work fine up to 90 C or 95 C for those above 1 GHz (copper). I guess they will probably work fine up until around that range ;-)
BTW, could you even touch the Heatsink at that temp?
