YEAH!!! I was sooooo @*#% nervous, yet it had to be done! I have PICS but I'm afraid the final one isn't too clear and I was impatient to get the chip back in my pc so sorry. Believe it or not L1c has solder on all four bridges. Had to check twice to be sure...But I can impart some tips...so 'kay... put your chip where you want it and gently tape it in place. As you can see I used Black electrical tape...comes up easily and is flexible. I also used it to "MASK" the L1 so then you don't have to be so worried about missing your mark whether you solder or paint or pencil. Just using a scissor I cut three pieces of tape. I wasn't worried about the top edge of the chip. First I used a Q-tip and laquer thinner to remove the old HAF thermal paste and also to clean the cpu, also wiping off the old pencil residue. I masked the cpu and with another q-tip put the smallest amount of Paste Flux over the area to help the solder take. I tried using pc solder from Radio Shack but found "Solder-Weld" silver bearing solder paste worked better. Put some out on the table and put the iron to it. I had to use two Magnifier glasses on top of each other to get a good close up. Barely touches the paste, and barely touched the L1s. Some didn't take at first. Also tried to use a friends mini ISO-tip quick charge solder iron, but it just wasn't hot enough. I was so jazzed I just grabbed my Radio Shack 40watt iron...filed the tip just so it was like a pencil tip, and BAM! I can't believe it! I have a 950@1050...haven't tried anything else yet...had to share the news...follow the links for Pics...I'm gonna pass out now. Thanx for allowing me to vent!!!!

P.S. What about the other cut bridges! Should we do those too? Why? Why not?

Good job! It takes some guts to take a soldering iron to your chip like that. I'm glad it worked out for ya. It will never wear off there thats for sure!

Thanx! I am new to the overclockers forum and love it. I had an old 500 k62 asus p5A that was running at 600 which made me gleefull, but not like this! I have the KT7A-RAID now and have to say am still wondering about "RAID". Didn't even know about it when I ordered the board...That's a whole'nother topic.

Here's the link to the pics!

I solute your bravado! Most would have taken a less challenging path. Your methodology was well thought out and your reward is permanent bridges. Don't mess with the others. Generally, they are not important with the right motherboard. BTW, might as well remove that sticker. Your warranty is definitely a thing of the past now. ;D

Heh heh, yeah, I thought that kind of ironic, the warranty sticker right there next to the soldered bridges. :):):)

WOW, nice job !
I'm still boring myself with HB pencils :( , I'm not brave enough and my hands shake like earthquakes at that scale.

In retro I wouldn't take what I said about sharpening the point of you soldering gun down too seriously. I did do that, but the solder doesn't like it very much. I was impatient and it was late, and I was determined, and it had to be done...better to wait and find a nice sharp point to start with. But you knew that already, but I was feeling a bit liable...

okay then...

I unlocked a friends cpu with a soldering iron, I used the standard $6.00 pencil iron from radio shack, and filed the tip down to just over toothpick size, used standard rosin core solder(had flux in the middle) primed the tip of the iron (after filing, this is where you put a small amount of solder on the tip as it starts to heat up) once the iron was hot, I added some more solder to the tip and "drew" a quick line between the dots ... worked very well! Good Luck Hope this helps future "solderers"

Hi,

Did you file down to the copper? I had trouble getting the solder to take that way. Have to admit though it was on my second soldering mission that I was having the most trouble. The tip was also a very "used" one.

The better irons are tin on steel, or tin on copper on steel. That way they can be very fine and still be stong. The drawbacks are once you wear through the plating, you throw away the tip and get a new one and you cant file it down.

I can't believe I soldered, three times total on my baby. First time to connect the bridges. Which was working fine by the way...Second time to tweak them beacause of some bleeping idea I had, and the third to go back to #1. So I do thank the CPU GOD for allowing me to boot! At all!
