View Full Version : Question about temperature..
Hi, looked around and couldnt find much info on this...what are 'good and safe' temp ranges for amd chips..specifically i wanna know for my amd athlon 800 tbird. i wanna overclock (i know how), but really just wanna know when I'm getting into the 'red' so to speak...better safe than sorry..anyway, can you give me some temp ranges for idle and under load?
Post a little bit more information about your system, motherboard, heatsink fan, core voltage, what monitor program you're using etc.
Some food for thought though, most of the onboard monitor programs, ASUS Probe etc, are notorious for inaccurate readings, sometimes reading 10C+ over actual temps. Generally, if you keep the temps no higher than the upper 50's (according to the onboard monitor), with a good HSF such as an FOP or a WBK and the system is stable, you should be alright.
imho, idle temp doesn't really matter. it's going to be below your full load temps, and if they're okay, then your idle temp is going to be okay.
personally, i'd say that a full-load temp, i.e. after two hours of gaming or seti or prime95, should be below 50c. ideally, you want it around 45c max, but i wouldn't really stress if it got up to 50c. however, that's my personal view, and many others wouldn't agree. i know a lot of peeps feel that 45c is that max upper limit, which is quite hard to attain with aircooling without very cool ambient temps.
AMDs techdocs say the max for 650 to 1ghz is 90C and 95c for 1.1 to1.333.
Of course, you don't want to be anywhere near that. Pretty much anything in the 30C to 40C at idle seems to be common, and mid40s under load. I would try to stay as far under 50c as possible.
Ok, little more info:
AMD Athlon 800 TBird
ABIT KT-7 mobo
128 meg pc133
8x100=800Mhz (for now, hehe) >:)
Vcore= 1.75
IO=3.34
typically idle=34C and after a pretty hard workout = 51C
This is in a mini tower, heatsink/fan i can't recall specific one right now (and i'm not at home) but it is pretty big (3 inches or so high) with a big fan on top. The monitoring program I am currently using is VIA hardware monitor...get the same readings from bios though
And thanks for the info, guys!
Your temps aren't real bad. Are you using thermal compound?
Yeah, I have some thermal grease on there. Its none of the fancy stuff though. So the temps look good...good to know...when I overclock it I'm sure they'll go up a little, but from what I have seen this wont be "death" to my chip then?
This is my first AMD, I like it better, but I'm used to Intel I guess. Do AMD just run a little hotter?
Amd's tend to run hotter than intels do. But don't worry about it, thet are desingned to run warmer. So if you see the mid to high 40's for a load temp, you are alright. :)
