How long does it take your XP to shut down? After getting all the security updates (the critical ones) my comp takes like one minute to shut down... any way i can fix this?

goto: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
goto: "Control" folder
rightclick on: "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
select: "modify"
set it lower than 2000 (try 200)

hope this helps. good luck.

also might want to turn off the shutdown "chime"...

goto: control panel
goto: sound properties
click on "sound" tab
in "program events" window, select "exit windows"
under "sound" box, select "none"
"apply" then "ok"

hope this helps. good luck.

default is 20 000 .... 2000 is quick enough. 200 is a bit rushed. We are talking about milliseconds here...

when i change this setting, what exactly am i changing? Is it a bad thing to do? I don't want to loose any information or cause the computer to shutdown improperly either. I was just wondering if the security updates did this to other people

You may also want to go into
"administrative tools\computer management\services and applications\services"
, and turn off any services that you don't need or use. Or just set them to start up manually. The less services XP has to stop when you shut down the better.

There was a subject on the updates a while back if you didn't catch it. Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and take off Hot Fix Q811493. That should get your computer going. if you don't have it, then do what the others suggested. Oh yeah, and if you want to modify your Services to get the least resources used up, go to blackviper.com (http://www.blackviper.com).

NP. The hot fix is: Q811493. It should display this after "Windows Hot Fix (SP2)" or something like that.

my xp shutdown depends on my comp usage ....

sometimes when i play alot of game and do alot of stuff , it takes like 15+ sec to shut itself.... but most of the time , it just shut under 5-8 sec :)

It doesn't really change with me...it always takes around 10 seconds or so for shutdown. Then again, I shutdown/restart usually only when I'm working on the computer or installing something. Other than that I leave it on.

i only give my computer 2 seconds to finish what it is doing on the shutdown and after 2 seconds, everything ends

fast shutdown
