my friend and i are days away from getting the final hdd for a server we built. we are going to run a dedicated desert combat server on it. i was wondering, am i going to need to buy another version of DC to get a different cd key, or can i install it using the same cd key i have? or can i just install the game to run as a dedicated server only? has anyone done this before?

i don't remember if this was UT2k3 or BF1942 but one of these has a standalone server that requires no cdkey. check it out. i'm leaning towards UT2k3 but it might be BF1942.

Por favor nooooooooo. If we have to buy a new copy of battlefield for this sever, I'll cry.

Oh yeah, if you play 1942, you might wanna check the server out when it's done, Max. Sever will be in Tulsa sitting on whatever OC-2048 connection SJR has at TU.

And now that we finally found the ram (I always knew miller had it), we'll be kicking it at 64 players plus!

When we get the server up (this weekendish), we'll put the IP out.

Definitly el al and eastings. With as big as this server will be with 2200xp 1gig of ram (more if I feel like it), ~240gig RAID 5 array, if we don't run some some big maps to support a big amount of folks, I'm gonna feel like I'm wasting SRJ's bandwidth. We still havn't figured out the specifics however. Hell, we don't even know if we'll be running straight BF1942 or Desert Combat.

Thing is, it might take awhile to get a commited "core" of people to keep the server consistantly full. But since I'm assuming we'll be the biggest and fastest BF1942 server in Green Country (maybe the state), it won't take long to get the box rocking 24/7.

And i've definitly played all the DC Docks i can stand at quakecon last week.

EDIT: I'm an idiot. Looking at the thread title, it looks like Chris is pretty sure we'll be running Desert Combat.

How can you hate docks??? I love climbing the giant tower and jumping onto the crates and sniping. I get more sniper kills on that map then any other map.

I hate docks because I love El Al.

The Docks rule! Although I will admit I have been enjoying 73 easting quite a bit lately. Operation Battleaxe has been keeping me busy too.

I'll play on the server. Watch out for {MAD PUPPIES}FIDO or [LA TECH] Shade00 - I alternate. :)

I'm personally getting more and more into the urban combat maps like stalingrad and Lost village.

There is nothing more satisfying then a good hard for for a flag in close quarters combat with dozens from each side fighting it out..

I swear one of these days I'm gonna design a map for this stuff :)

Anyone know the status on the CD key thing yet?

Also, my battlefield server can beat up your battlefield server.

Ok in actual reply to SpaceRnagerJoe's question, no you don't need to buy an extra CD to run the server as the liscence allows you to run 1 game and 1 server (Thats why you are able to run the game from either disk)

Also from one dedicated server administrator to anoth i would recommened that you use this (http://www.blackbagops.com/) Software as it will make administration easier it also has a remote admin tool which will allow you to connect and administrate your server from anywhere that has a PC and a connection to the internet.

Also please do not put your server settings to allow 64 players unless you have the bandwidth if you running of broadband with i would recomened for a setting of around 30 players Max you will need around 80kbs upload per player and even this is a ruff figure. If you have any problems or more questions don't hesitate to PM me.

groovy, thanks a bunch. a program to admin the server was actually going to be one of my next questions, so rock on.

as far as bandwidth, i think i got it :D. i have 100baset in my room. the switch i plug into has an optical uplink to the schools backbone, which is oc12 or something. so until they realize how much bandwidth im sucking, and cap it, i should be good to go!

namagomi is coming home from school this weekend, so hopefully we will have time to get the server up and running. i will be sure to post the IP once everything is kosher with it.

Lol, I wish I could get around my school's firewall. I'd be setting up a server then too. :)

no u dont need a cd key our DC clan runs a dedicated DC server at some big ass datacenter you use the dedacated server installer and use blackbagopps server manager.

alright guys, just to update you. i put the last hdd in the server a little bit ago, and the RAID 5 is building right now. its going to take a little while though. i have a friend on a beer run right now, so depending what i do over the next few hours will determine whether or not i get windows installed tonight :D. everything should be pretty much good to go by monday. now i just to need to find that second 512 stick of ram i have laying around...

in case you missed it up above, here are some of the server stats:

AMD XP2200+ w/ pal alpha 8045
4x IBM 80Gig 120 GXPs (RAID 5 =~240gigs usable space)
2x512 sticks of assorted ram
Abit AT7 Mobo
Intel 100baseT ethernet adaptor (not the crappy onboard)

ill get an IP for you guys later this week!

Don't you mean 1x512 and 2x256 sticks? I could have sworn that free ram was 2x256 sticks.

Also, you've found the ram, right?

Hey, I installed the windows updates. Credit where credit is due.

Also, for all you bf players out there, SRJ told me the IP should be 129.244.28.137

SpaceRangerJoe

the other ram was 2x256. i had the little plastic thing holding the ram, and i didnt open it up till last night. i thought it was a single 512. and i installed the first round of windows updates.

as i speak, i am plugging the server in. im gonna start making the map list and stuff, so hopefully it will be up and running soon. reliability on the server might not be the best this week. i need to move my room around (getting rid of that fridge chiller i made) to make room for this computer stuff. also, my university was hit hard by that blaster worm, so they've been messing with the internet alot. but not to fret, it will be rock solid by next week at the latest!

alright kiddies, i have had a great day with computers today. the server has been nothing but a headache. i hooked everything back up earlier today, after putting the ram in last night. turn on the computer, and nothing happens. hit the power. wait... try it again. check all fans. fans good. check hdds. nothing. they dont power up. still nothing on the monitor. hit power switch. wait... one more time. turn it on. still no hdds. burning smell! hit power switch. disassemble computer. as suspected, burning smell coming from newly killed cpu.

so i just happen to have an 1800 tbred laying around, so i pop that in, rebuild it all (redoing some bad wiring :D). it fires up, finally. so i play with the server settings for BF, get it how i like it, and hit start. i get some error message about 2 models using the same something. it does this over and over. so i uninstall the server. bust out my BF disks, and try to install. the first time, it blue screens on me, saying that my hardware has failed, and the system has halted. it recommends that i contact the hardware manufacturer. gee, thanks guys. so i reboot and try again. it gets about 30% through in the install, and it does it again. so needless to say, im not messing with the server any more tonight. i stopped just short of throwing it out the window (i know that would have made namagomi very unhappy). so it will probably be another day till the server is up and running. sorry guys...

Oh no you didn't.

You just should keep your freaking hands off the server. I had everything perfect when I gave it to you, and less than 24 hours later, you kill my CPU and now the battlefield is FUBAR. gg
