View Full Version : eheim alternatives?
I'm looking for an alternative to eheim 1250 besides viaqua 1300. My viaqua is LOUD about half the time, and the anticlog feature mod will not stay. I have used pvc cement on it and it STILL broke within 12 hours.
I want 250 or more gph, 6 ft or more head, Very quiet; and I'd like it under 40$
Mag's look nice, but their wattage is very high, and I wonder if my radiator could keep up. Also, I would imagine they are rather loud. Anyone have any recommendations? Or if not, know where I can get a Eheim under 60$ shipped?

Mag3 will do fine if you have a chevette heatercore or larger, maybe smaller but I can't say because I use a chevette. They are actually very silent, have more of a square shape than the eheim so they can fit in smaller areas, and the top where the barbs are can be rotated so it can fit even better. Not to mention the yare cheaper, I would go with one but I'm partial. :)
Can you tell me a bit about your system, and if you've ever used another pump and if so, what change were in your temps when you switched?
Thanks.
EDIT: Oh cool. the 3 is perfect... only 8 more watts than an eheim. I was looking at the 5. Just bought a 3 BIN on ebay.
Goodthing too. This viaqua is very reliable... but this on and off buzzing is driving me insane. Once it is out of my machine I'm going to use plumbers epoxy on the damn thing. IT WILL NOT COME UNDONE AGAIN! Just to spite it
By the way, did you buy barbs and teflon them on or did you stretch tygon on it?

Some petsmarts carry them if you are looking locally.

You can look at the specs of some popular pumps using the 2 links below. Do some research and you may find a better pump then the ones everyone else is using. I just purchased a pump (quiet one 3000) I haven't seen anyone else use here yet. Hopefully it will work good.

I'm using a Quiet One 1200. It gives me slightly lower temps than the Maxi-jet I used before it. Its a lot quieter, but I can't call it silent. A very nice choice though, for only $21.
You need to watch some of these pumps are water cooled arent made to be ran externely the mag3 says not recomended for ex use.....
I've got a mag 2 in one of my systems........and it outperformed my eheim 1250.

I was impressed with my Mag model 2 as well. It was much better then the Via aqua pump I demoed for a while.

Can't say enough about my Mag 5. It may run a tad hotter than the 3 but not if you got your rad fan blowing across it.

why did you like the Mag2 over the Via?

I ran both pumps submerged. For some reason, the water and my cpu temps were warmer by a couple degrees when I used the via. I posted this in a thread a number of months ago. I'll search and try to find it.
When I put both pumps in the bath tub, the danner pumped with much more authority then the Via did. The via is a good pump for the money, but there are better choices.
I have a Mag 2 also, and it's a great pump. It's impressive how it did with a 5+ foot bong and 12 feet of tubing. It sat on the floor, and pushed water up through my computer on the desk, then up to the bong's shower head easily.
I now use the Via (I know, what was I thinking? though it works fine), but I may yet get the Mag 3 to replace it. I'm toying with some new water system ideas, and since the Mag 2 had over 3 years of reliable service, it's got my vote. It still works fine, but since I modded it, the inlet/outlet doesn't rotate and won't fit into the plastic box that the Via can.
And as for being submersible or not, here's a quote from Danner's own front webpage
The Magnetic_Drive utility pump is a magnetically-driven, submersible pump.
and
Operates submerged or in-line from the pm3's page.
As for a temperature difference, I have no idea. I changed pumps when I completely changed water systems I believe....the past gets foggier with age :o

I was reading about the Mag3 at one of the links someone posted...figures I cant find it now.......I was just wondering cuz thats what I was going to go with..til I read that.....
"Note: Mag-Drive pumps are not recommended for external use."
It's right in the link. Noone seems to be having problems though.... so we'll see.

Kind of like Christmas lights that have "For indoor or outdoor use only" on the package... as opposed to... ?
Except in reverse.
Yeah, I know. Danner says you can, Marine Depot says you can't...flip a coin. They may have gotten a couple of 'em RMA'd by numbskulls, and skirt the guarantee this way.
Mine's run both ways over a year just peachily <(yeah, that's probably not even a word :D ).
So what do you guys think?I was hoping to buy one today....Mag3 my best bet?...........but I dont want it to overheat on me....hmmm maybe ill add some heatsinks and air cool it.......,
{EDIT}
I bought the Mag3 localy for $54.00..........

what pump would you recommend for me... At first im only going to be WC the cpu, but may get a gpu block later on. Would the mag2 be sufficient?

Yes, the mag 3 might yield a tiny bit better results though.

i went to petsmart and they didnt have the mag3, but they did have mag2 for 29.99. The mag2 will work fine, but the mag3 will be a bit cooler?

Thats really funny cause the eheims are mag-drive and say explicitly that they can be used inline or submerged. I'd say that most mag drive pumps are ok for inline use.
